Phosphatidylserine to help you get bigger? - Friday, August 01, 2008 12:55 PM ( #1 )
A good deal of research has been done and is still being done to understand all the complex benefits of oral supplementation of phosphatidylserine.

The findings demonstrate (suggest) that phosphatidylserine is an effective supplement for combating exercise-induced stress and preventing the physiological deterioration that can accompany too much exercise. One mechanism for this is that Phosphatidylserine supplementation promotes a desired hormonal status for athletes by blunting increases in cortisol levels.

What does that mean?
This supplement can help prevent muscle break-down.

What does that do for you?
Well, when you want to get bigger you are basically looking at balancing two things: maximizing muscle gains and minimizing muscle losses.  You see, the body regularly breaks muscle down on an ongoing basis for various reasons, including as a response to certain hormone states induced by things such as stress and intense training.

Can it help you if you lift weights?
This research has shown benefits for those undergoing intense unaccustomed (progressive intensity) weight training, including trained athletes who train in a manner that is progressive in intensity.

Many of the functions imparted by the supplementation of phosphatidylserine, and they are many (including improved mood, deceasing swelling, increasing memory, improving immune response, decreasing cortisol, decrease muscle soreness, increased training capacity, improved recovery, etc),  have the potential to benefit humans while undertaking physical exercise and during the recovery period that follows exercise

Oral supplementation with phosphatidylserine has been reported to positively influence perceived muscular soreness and well-being. Furthermore, oral supplementation with phosphatidylserine has been demonstrated to improve exercise capacity during high-intensity training.

The nitty gritty:

You don't need this supplement to get big.  The truth is, you don't need any supplement to get big.  If you are already training and have optimal nutrition practices in place, and you know how to train with progressive intensity, then this might help you to get that extra 5% out of your efforts.

The response is DOSE dependent.
That means if you do not take the correct dose, the response is not observed.
That does is currently observed to be 800 mg/day.

No toxicity or other safety considerations have been observed.  It is currently derived from soy.

How much will it cost us?
To date, this has been a pricey supplement.

Unlike many of the common hyped overpriced supplements...this actually has volumes of research behind it.  Sadly, nobody that I know of offers it in the 800 mg dose or in bulk. It is sold mostly for the memory enhancing benefits and mostly in 100 mg making it price prohibitive for most.

Watch out for the 500 mg COMPLEX which only contains 100mg.

That should change soon with the newest research...unless it is perceived by manufacturers that the cost is too prohibitive to offer the product.

so is it basically the same thing as beta alanine?

No.  THey are different and play different roles in the body.  Also,  the mechanism of beta-alanine is very different.  It is a buffer and acts to increase the peak output energy systems.

One question we ask in research after consistent findings, like those for PS, creatine monohydrate and beta-alanine, is if there is a notable effect from taking a combination of supplements that might have unrelated mechanisms.

We shall see.

Had to run before I was done!

Because carnosine (BA) has other roles: as an antioxidant, a metal chelator, a Ca(2+) and enzyme regulator, an inhibitor of protein glycosylation and protein-protein cross-linking...there may be overlap in what PS and BA do.

Some of these mechanisms may overlap.  Some may have an additive effect.

is this something that would be beneficial to utilize?  how expensive is it? (do you have an exact price?)

Re: RE: Phosphatidylserine to help you get bigger? - Friday, August 08, 2008 12:14 AM ( #6 )
Current price would run about 1.60 a day (basically $6 for 3.75 days worth at 800 mg).

If you were looking for something at the top of your game  and you were already on top of everything else...it could have a place.

I am looking to talk to some of the people in sports nutrition about offering this as a straight up lifters supplement.

I will read the new studies using soy based PS and let you know.

Initially it says 3x a day for the total dose.  (example: 200 in the am, 300 1 hour pre-training. 200 pm)
But I will let you know what worked best in research.

Tell us about the source?

Still, the dosage methodology was just to have them take it daily.
More specifics when I find it!

http://www.pubmedcentra...ender.fcgi?artid=2503954

It is IMPORTANT to recognize that most of the research out there is on bovine derived PS...now we do not use that..we use soy based PS...so you want to be sure the research is new and uses the soy form.

"Phosphatidylserine was historically obtained from bovine cortex (BC-PS). Due to the potential transfer of infectious disease, this supplement is now considered unsuitable. More recently, soy-derived phosphatidylserine (S-PS) has become accepted as a safe alternative."

What we are looking for is that this statement hods up:

"The findings suggest that PS is an effective supplement for combating exercise-induced stress and preventing the physiological deterioration that can accompany too much exercise. PS supplementation promotes a desired hormonal status for athletes by blunting increases in cortisol levels."

"Mean peak cortisol concentrations and area under the curve (AUC) were lower following PS (39 ± 1% and 35 ± 0%, respectively) when compared to placebo (p < 0.05). PS increased AUC for testosterone to cortisol ratio (184 ± 5%) when compared to placebo (p < 0.05)."

Cortisol went down, the Test to cortisol ratio went up.  That is what we want to see!!
