Pasta vs. Rice - Thursday, February 19, 2009 9:37 AM ( #1 )
Hey guys, got a quick one for you.....
I'm trying to do some cutting (nothing drastic) and am trying to stay "clean."  I know that brown rices is a staple in any clean diet, but from the beginning, I've had problems putting it down......my question is, is there a huge difference if I substitute whole-wheat past for the brown rice?  I would still be eating this with my chicken breast and vegetables depending on which meal I'm on.

Thanks guys!

During cutting I would rely more on rice and during bulking I would rely more on pasta. Paste isn't only a good source of complex carbs but it has a bit of protein from the beef.

Ok, so for cutting, rice would be better, but I'm not crippling my fat-loss attempts just because of the whole-wheat pasta, right?  I'm not getting ready for a competition or anything, just slowing getting back to where I was.

whole grain rice and whole wheat pasta have near identical carb/protein ratios so it really doesn't matter, both have starch so the choice is which youd rather eat.

I believe brown rice is a medium gi carb and wholewheat pasta a low gi carb. That might help.

Hey motokouk, I had to look it up, but you are correct.  And isn't the lower the GI the better?

I guess it is, slower burning etc. But I'm thinking someone might want to correct me there...Can sense it..My spidey senses tingle :-)
Both are great, I'd opt for pasta, only takes 10 mins, brown rice takes forever!!!

True, brown rice takes longer to cook. So, cook enough for 2 or 3 meals at a time, then get yourself a steamer. Cooked rice will warm very quickly in one of these and tastes like you just made it. Plus, the steamer is a good way to cook healthy and it is very easy so you will use it for more than just the rice.

I bought one a few years ago for around 12 bucks. Just a pot to contain water, a colander like insert to hold whatever you are cooking and a vented lid. I use it for almost everyday.

Yeah when I move out I'm looking to get one, right now it isn't an option for me which sucks as sometimes I'm not so organised, figure I want a curry but can't wait that long for the rice to cook ha ha! So I go for something else... Maybe one day I'll learn to plan ahead!!

A steamer is worth the money. As I mentioned, I use mine almost daily, especially for fish. Cod is particularly good steamed and I enjoy it so much this way that I do not even use salt, butter, or lemon. Great protein and very low fat and calories.

In absence of a steamer you can use a steamer basket. This is a little folding tray like device that will fit over a skillet or pan. You can find them at Wal-Mart, and other stores, in the kitchen gadgets for a couple of bucks. Also, a metal colander that will fit over a pot of water works well too.

Ah cool, thanks for the heads up there! Maybe I'll just look out for the basket/collander, I already have steamer pans guess I could put it strait in there. We'll see. So how long does it take to cook that way? I've done fish in the steamer before. Very nice! add some olive oil after cooking - delicious ! -

As a rule, much faster than other methods. Fish cooks very fast as do many veggies. One of my favorites is potatoes and carrots and they get done much faster than other methods and, best of all, no added fats.
