Painful burn when squating? - Monday, September 29, 2008 3:53 PM ( #1 )
OK the weight i squat isnt very heavy because i just started not to long ago but when i do the first set of 5 (mark rippetoes starting strength) I feel a sharp painful burn in my..umm i guess upper pubic region you could call it. Its only for the first set. Could this be because im not warming up enough?

Thanks

The groin area can get sore from squats if you let your knees go out far enough to the side (which you should be), but that's moreso your inner thighs where your adductors are, and not what I would call your "upper pubic region".  Not sure what else to tell you.

Have you read the book yet to see if your form is correct?

That doesn't sound right at all. I've never had a hernia and I'm guessing that the pain wouldn't go away like that but I'd get checked out if you can. Thats really one of the last places I would guess that you'd have pain during a squat...

stretch, also you may be trying to do too much weight too quickly and its causing pain in your hip adductors (mainly the adductor magnus) and the associated tendons.

The squat is one exercise I've learned to RESPECT.  It can hurt you bad if you don't treat it with respect.  You have to SLOWLY increase the weight, and always be conscious that you are maintaining excellent form througout your entire body, both upper and lower.

foam roll your Glutes and IT/TFL band and adductors(inner thigh) and liek they said stretch esp your hip flexors. Foam rolling will make squating feel much more comfortable as well

i think it was the combination of not warming up and having y legs too close together. I  warmed up more today and had my legs wider and no burn at all.

Don't go down anywhere near as low as you do, Squat side-on to a mirror, good form of course and just stop at the point where you lose your natural curve in your spine, then use that as a reference point to never go further down than that until your flexibility improves.

And feet should be parallel and shoulder width apart. Knees shouldn't go over toes. Chest should be pushed out ALWAYS (can't stress that enough) to keep posture good and hips stabilized. You should know the rest.

In fact, get a PT in the gym to assess your form.
