Oww my back =-( - Thursday, July 31, 2003 11:31 AM
Im a fragile person, for example i' ve been to the emergency room 5 times in the last 6 months, and even once on christmas morning. But, the only injury that has been with me the whole time has been the spasms (<- spelling?) in my back. I had at least 10, but now it seems to be around 5. Or so my physical therapist tells me. Unfortunately, he refuses to call me back so i cant reschedual. But anyways, anyone have a similar problem and have any hints, its really inhibiting my comeback to lifting. Thx for the comments/suggestions

Not similar but I' ve noticed my lower back was hurting.. and I was frustrated as well. My form on my squatting was near perfect so how could this be happening?

Turns out.. it' s all a vicious circle. As I don' t stretch, muscle got tighter and my hamstrings were so tight I do believe they were putting some stress on the lower back.

So in my case, pain was caused to not stretching.

However, you play a lot of b-ball right? So you must stretch on a regular basis.

You might try adding a banana or two to your diet for potassium.. just as a precaution against low potassium levels and because bananas are good anyway. Plus your monkey avatar would appreciate it if you' d eat one as well.

Spasms- That stinks- Are they any way related to lifting? I mean, do you notice you have them during or after a workout, or are they just totally random? How long have you been having them?
Personally, anytime I feel something even slightly wrong, I put off lifting- At least, I put off working out that particular muscle. When my back gives me problems, I hardly do anything since it' s involved in just about everything- Maybe I overreact, but even though I want to build muscle pretty badly, my desire for not being a cripple outweighs it- Back injuries scare the hell out of me, my little brother had to have hernia surgery, and the docs screwed his back up permanently.
I' m not trying to scare you here, but be very careful with your back. Spasms, pain, tightness, whatever- Take them as signs that you need to take care of your back.

Five months ago I did some bad dead-lifts and my back was never the same since. A couple of weeks ago I saw a doctor and got the bad news -my spine is broken. I have three months in a brace with limited activity. If all goes well I won't have to get my vertebrae bolted together thru surgery. I am going to have to sit out my senior year of football because I neglected my pain for so long. The moral of this story is don't neglect your pain if it becomes a problem. There is a difference between a pulled muscle pain and a bone pain; if you feel a crushing in your back while your squatting see a doctor. As for your spasms, they are a sign of trauma to your spine, you may want to check out a doctor if it continues to get worse.

Well said!

And I sincerely hope your injury isn't life debilitating.. wishing you well...

o man bulk that sucks so much, your senior year of football. I feel for ya man. My friend actually did the same thing, he's an awesome soccer player, like he goes to other countries and plays against manchester united and stuff. But anyways he was leg pressing a lot, like 700 pounds or something, when he was 14 btw, and he got a compression fracture or something in his spine and had to wear one of those. But he was fine, so if you do what the doctor tells ya, you'll be ok. But my back is actually a lot better. Still some isolated pain but i can go a while without pain. I hope you get better bulk, hope to hear more from ya

Back injuries- Skeery stuff! I've always tried to be extra careful when it came to my back- I'm probably not lifting to my potential when it comes to my back because of my fear of injuring it.
I had a friend in the Army who insisted on challenging someone to a leg press contest- Keep in mind, neither one of them were into regular weightlifting at all- He ended up tearing a muscle in his ass. Besides being a serious injury and causing his medical discharge, the humiliation drove him to suicide.
Okay, so maybe he didn't kill himself, but we did laugh at him a lot.

I'd have to agree with mda on this one. Stretch your hamstrings, tightness in the legs can cause stiffness and sorness in the lower back area. I've had back problems previously and most of it was due to insufficient stretching of the legs. If you've pulled your back then I would recommend you put ice packs on it for the first 24-48hrs and then alternate between hot and cold.

Big recommendation a product called "Ice Cold Gold" it's a gel that helps numb the pain and relieve sorness.
