Does anyone have any tips for a modestly out of shape 45 year old taking taking up training with weights?

I' m really not trying to shape my body; I' m just trying to get into better condition. Still, for motivational purposes, I wonder, are there any famous stories of sucessful late starting body builders?

Thanks

Well it really depends on your goals and what you want to acheive. But if you do a little searching I' m sure you can find plenty of documented cases. For instance Body For Life has some pictures of folks who made major changes. Same thing with Golds Gym. While I can' t speak for each of the programs that they recommend, the results some folks are getting is truely amazing.

Mda recommends the MaxOT program and I' ve been using it since April. I' m not quite as old as you (I' m 34) but I' ve seen great results. The key is to decide that you' re going to get into the best shape of your life, then get a good balanced diet, and exercise program. Then if you follow through, you' ll get the results that you' re seeking. That and hang out here to get the moral support to keep going through the hard times.

Good luck Smile

www.ast-ss.com is the site for MaxOT.

I wouldn' t recommend Body for Life. It' s an ok book if you want some basics but some of the stuff like eating before working out isn' t really accepted as good practice. Not a lot of detail, and a lot of hype to sell EAS products.

I think there are also a few other programs that some folks here use, but a lot of the folks that are regulars seem to like the MaxOT and I highly recommend it. I' m finally getting my stubborn arms to grow and that' s been something I never was able to do before.

Train like you are young. I see plenty of older guys in the gym pushing it hard. Most injuries come from improper use of technique and form. Not age. So as long as you train hard but smart, I think the same principals will apply to an older bodybuilder.
