Only taking protein after workout? - Thursday, June 11, 2009 3:17 PM ( #1 )
Hey guys,

Been a while since I posted on here. I have a quick question regarding protein...I've been training for about a month now, and I've been looking into taking some supplements. Thing is, I'm only going 3 times per week and I'm being quite casual about things. Would it be effective taking protein only after I workout those 3 times per week, or do you need to be taking it every day? I know it's important to have protein after a workout, so I'm assuming it will be useful for my recovery?

Thank you.

Spenny

Protein shakes are mostly a convenience in my opinion.
Atrophy vs. hypertrophy reflects the net balance between protein degradation and protein synthesis. Hypertrophy (muslce growth) requires that protein resynthesis exceeds protein degradation and the opposite for atrophy. Amino acids taken before and after exercise markedly increases protein balance. Shakes allow you to get a good score of amino acids quickly after workouts. On other days, as long as you eat well enough you will be fine.

the only time you need protein shakes are after workouts. This is becuase they are easy/convenient and fast digesting to get to the muscle quickly.

But you still need protein through out the day but you should be getting this from food.

Thanks guys, great responses. I'm beginning to understand how the body reacts after a workout, which is of course important to understand.

I'm eating as much protein rich foods as I can, so I should be sorted.

Thanks again.
