Onions - Sunday, February 22, 2009 3:24 PM ( #1 )
So which onions do you guys use for cooking?  I have tried white, yellow, and red onions, and I haven't noticed a significant taste difference, so I was if one is more beneficial than another.

i use the red or purple ones more often fresh and on lighter stuff.  Yellow when I am sauteeing and with heavier foods or on pasta, or if the onion needs to be cooked.  Slight taste differences, but don't know anything else health-wise.

Most times I use white but now and then, especially if I want a stronger onion taste, I use the red. I also very often use Green onions. The tops are great in soups, eggs, Asian foods.

Yeah, I'm with KillBill, but that are almost all exactly the same when it comes to nutritional value.

onions are good in fibre. very healthy too.
when onions were first cultivated they were considered sacred and more valuable than gold in the middle east.
egyptians fed onions to the slaves to increase their strength while hauling heavy stones to build their pyramids and were also considered as very coverted marriage gifts.
And onions are a very tasty when deep fried in oil and seasoned with regional spices.
onion shoots are very good for the bowels.

but if u plan to gorge on a raw onion (which is probably the best way to eat), u shud make sure u eat something solid after that and also try getting some mouth freshners if u plan to be around the ladies ;)

good luck!

Some natural anti-biotics attack harmful bacteria rather than generally all bacteria.
I know garlic's one of them, can't remember some others...
While we're on the topic of anti-biotics, **** your doctor, that crap does more harm than good, always has, always will.

Yeah, sorry I didn't elaborate. I agree with all your points. I was being a bit vague.

Primarily I was referring to the use of prescribed anti-biotics for the treatment of cold/flu, which is what I more often than not see it used for.

Like you said, colds and flu aren't bacterial infections either, they're viral. So without affecting the cold/flu virus, you're killing all your body's natural flora and making it stress even more, just on the side for no realistic gain. Not to mention they weaken your immune system by doing so.

They have their place but you have to really see the medical world for what it really is at times - a business. Countless surveys have even proven that about 40% of doctors prescribe you something to just shut you up and make money in the sole faith in false prescriptions as placebos.
I'm not joking, they do that. :p

And hey, you can still eat onions, just don't have a great deal, and if you're worried about the potential anti-biotic effects research it a bit more. If you're still worried, looking into buying some probiotics, which I recommend anyway but still. lol

Alright, another onion question:
Does carmelizing the onions in a frying pan change their nutrition at all?  They taste a lot sweeter/better and I'm curious.

I don't think so, unless you cartelize them in butter, that would add fat.
