Ok here goes nothing. - Tuesday, June 30, 2009 12:55 PM ( #1 )
After months of reading threads on this site I decided to let you guys pick me apart...ha ha.   I turn 44 next month and my goal is to enter a Novice Masters 45-50 year old BB event in October of 2010.   Picked the event and now have 15 months to bulk up then cut (I can't wait as I look like a damn whale in these shots).  Note after a 8 year haitus, I started lifting again.   I was a gym rat from 13 until I hit 35, then I was just burned out.   Met a gal, have 2 kids and working out was just an after thought.   Then I blew up to 220 last fall...fugly!   Just lost 20 lbs since last fall and starting to watch what I eat more and more.    Please critique.    Here is what I see:

1.   Really have to focus on the waist, starting to do abs 2 times a week for 300-400 reps.

2.   Upper back width, doing pull ups and more deadlifts than ever.

3.   Upper chest.....doing inclines as a priority now.

4.   Legs........need work on everything.

I really enjoy reading every day and have to say some of you have directly given me incentive to get back into shape and have the balls to get on stage.   I have to delusions of grandure of winning.   Much like JMBS (who stole my thunder brother) the accomplishment of getting to the point where I can walk on stage will be all I need.   If I place...then that's all gravy!

Nice diaper look huh?

You're a big guy.

Just work on your back a little bit more, particularly the lats.

your pretty yolked,  i dont know to many 44 year olds that are swoll like you.  Your back width isn't to bad.  I think it's your waist size thats hurting your lat spread.   traps need some work.  good luck

Agreed, never used to do Pull Ups, now they are the first upper back we do.   Also paying my dues with deadlifts now.

MHB,
Your hair isn't so bad. About like mine. Totally an age thing. Loosing hair where you want it, and gaining hair where you don't. The guy I workout with could pass for a bear from the backside if he had his shirt off in the woods.

MHB,
Didn't mean to "steal your thunder."!  And I don't know why I didn't discover your thread until now.  I'm technologically challenged.  :(  Sorry.

I'm no expert on the whole physique critique thing but here goes:  Man I wish I had the amount of muscle you have, particularly in your back.  I think the spread and thickness look pretty good.  The spread will look very nice with a reduced waist.  Shoulders and arms look pretty good.  Forearm is big and vascular!  I think you're probably right about the chest and legs.  I can't wait to see what you look like shaven and shredded!  I have a feeling there's a lot of beef waiting to show!

Good luck with your training!  I look forward to making the "journey to stardom" (ha ha!) with you!

JMBS-I was waiting for you to show up brother.    No biggee on stealing my thunder, got me motivated to get my pics up on the site, albiet it took me a while as well!    Cracked me up with the "shaven & shredded" comment.    Look forward to seeing your progress.   Did you see the show you were going to?   Any feedback on the 45-50 year old division?    Any estimate on their size or guess on the competition weight?    I can never tell w/pictures.   Presuming most guys will be in the 170-185 range?

MHB,
I'm confused:  I thought the way I "stole your thunder" was with my thread about going to see the show on Saturday.  Look under Contest Preparation for "Notes from my 1st contest as spectator.  Next yr ME up there."  The Masters Over 45 was a lot less competitive than the Masters 35 to 45.  The 35 to 45 was divided into 2 weight classes:  under 176#, above 176#.  The above 176 class was very competitive.  That was the class the guy next to me said the top 5 were probably all on steroids.  There were 8 competitors in the Over 45 class, and 5 walked away with trophies.  A trophy would be icing on the cake for me.  Survival and wanting to compete again are my priorities.  The Novice Light Heavyweight class (176-198#) had only 10 competitors and it was one of the largest classes.  Another thing I learned is that you can compete as a Novice until you win a class as a Novice, then you have to go to the Open classes.

Have you attended a show?  If not, do it!  I can't imagine competing in one having never attended one before.  Good luck!

JMBS-I was referring to posting a thread stating you were going to compete next year in a 45-50 Novice Show.   I was just thinking of the same thing and that day you posted.....thus stealing my thunder.   All good bro.

I'm hoping my show won't have a ton of guys either, based on the pictures I've seen we should be okay.   I'll read your other post re seeing the show.   I'll be watching for your updates.   I plan on posting pics every 60-90 days with my progress.   Hopefully the gut will slowly disappear.   Good luck bro!
