Oblique routines at home - Tuesday, June 17, 2008 8:00 PM
I've been reading about developing obliques (and the Appollo's belt, the V thing), and since I do a fullbody routine, I don't really focus much on obliques, but I want them to stick out. What exercises can I do that really make them show?

I don't have any equipment except for 10 lb dbs, but I hear you shouldn't do obliques with weights anyway.

I'm thinking about doing this routine on tuesdays and thursdays. The questions I'm having are Whether or not this is a good idea, and what exercises are good for developing obliques and the V belt.

Do you currently do your entire routine at home. If not you should work obliques at the gym. I really like side raises off the glute/ham machine.

I don't really wanna stick in a bunch of ab workouts at the end of my routine. Should I just do these exercises between sets of other exercises? Thanks for the input!

I dunno if it's bad or not, but my routine lasts around 55 minutes, so any extra work would be too long.

Make your rest periods between sets shorter

That is pretty long. Like above said maybe you need to shorten your rest periods. I put ab work in the middle somewhere to make sure I do it.

I'm not sure if I have a glute/ham machine or not. Could I use the one for back hypers and have the same effect?

I'm gonna shorten rest periods, but I'm gonna just put them between sets towards the end. I won't forget, haha.

Lots of ideas there.

I saw that list before. Well, I tried the twisting situps today on a decline, and for some reason, I felt really sick after. I think I drank my shake 30 mins before working out. Couldn't finish the rest of my ab work because I felt bad.

Should I drink my shake earlier, or cut these out entirely?

We do have a glute/ham machine, but this lady was hogging it, and I didn't feel like asking since I felt bad anyway.

I don't buy into the whole "you have to finish your workout in less than an hour" idea. So what if your testosterone levels dip a little towards the end of your workout? That's why you do your heavy lifts first. I don't think knocking out some abs at the end of every other workout is going to hurt your gains. Between my workout, my HIIT cardio and my abs (after the cardio) I was in the gym for almost 2 hours the other night. Felt great too! I think someone else mentioned to shorten your rest periods as well. Not a bad idea, you could probably easily shave off 5 to 10 min. from doing that and that's plenty o' time to get some abs in.
Age: 25 Height: 5'10
Weight as of 8/31/08: 160lbs.
Clean bulk starts now!
Current Maxes as of 6/4/08:
Squat: 250lbs.
Deadlift: 255lbs.
Bench: 285lbs.

Lost 45lbs. of fat this year, now its time to eat and start replacing that with muscle!

not to mention your delving deeper into a catabolic state with no food or protein in you...unless your drinking a shake during the workout.

I think it was the fact that you're a ripped machine. But ya, I dunno what Pssst's BF% is like but if you want your obliques to "really show" trimming the BF is going to do a lot more than just targeting them with ab workouts (not saying you shouldn't work them out, but getting nice and cut is what's going to show them off).

I haven't seen any improvement in my obliques yet, so I dunno.

I'm starting to deadlift with proper form now, so maybe I'll see an improvement there.

EDIT: Better form, probably not proper yet

I'm not suggesting he workout 2 hours, I usually keep my workout to 1 1/2 hours or under. And no I'm not drinking a shake during my workout. I usually pop some BCAA's right before and then drink my shake right after I'm done. I guess if I was bulking I'd be more worried about it but I've been losing weight and getting stronger so I don't have too many complaints atm. I'm sure there's validity to the keeping your workout duration reasonable, but I think its probably a little overexaggerated much like the idea of "overtraining".

well true i guess its not like youre gonna start losing muscle if you train for over an hour, but you always hear about the "window" right after your workout where you wanna get food in as fast as possible to kickstart the recovery process.  The longer you stay in the gym, the more that window is closing.
