Oats in shakes

I make a protien shake everymorning...instead of having oats today..I have read you put oats in your shakes. I use steel cut oats ....do you put them in raw...I did this morning and I can drink anything ...nothing is too gross for me ..so I don't mind it....I am just wondering if you put them in raw uncooked or cooked...rolled or steel cut?

Well as far as cooked or not, i would not cook them and then put them in a shake, but thats just me. Also either rolled or cut would be fine. I think you might be worrying to much about the little things, just stick to the basic diet rules, low glycemic carbs, lots of protein, and moderate good fats and you'll be fine.

I put them in raw. If you cook them first then what you'll get is basically oatmeal with whey in it. What I do is blend the raw oats by themselves first so they turn into a powder. Then I mix in the rest of my shake ingredients. I only use 1/2 cup in my shake though. Whereas I usually eat 2 cups if I prepare oatmeal.

raw oats. Need to be rolled or quick oats. Steal cut take a while to cook normally right? Those might not blend up right.

I did put them (raw steel cut oats) into the shake this morning...I usually make a shake with pure whey powder, and one banana being most of the carbs..with some added flax seed.and other green foods....I drink half of what I make , then half post work out....today I forgot to put in my whey before, but I do have a half of a ready do drink low carb EAS mixed with coffee also in the AM ...so today I put in my whey post work out and the oats had gotten softer...so next time I will food process them before and keep it in a tub to use ...it is just easier for me to get my carbs in with out eating toast or something not as healthy ...just trying to gain muscle and lose fat.. need a good fuel to gain the muscle for moderately to intense work outs but I can drink pretty much anyting in shake form (except raw eggs) that is too gross for me! I dont mind some chewy oats in the mix...I was concerned about the digestion of it and so far so good,...it does not bother my stomach at all. Thanks for your input everyone!

I did switch to almond milk a while ago...skim is probably better for the protien, but it does cut calories and I add whey factors anyway...

jdw1969 I did put them (raw steel cut oats) into the shake this morning... ....I drink half of what I make , then half post work out... A buddy told me that the amino acids in most protein supplements are unstable in water, so you might want to add the protein to the shake just before you drink it, or an hour before max. I'm not 100% sure about this, though, anyone mind confirming? BIGPOPPAPIT guess the whole milk is good for me i can use the xtra calories trying to gain weight.. Whole milk good for you? Nah dude, those extra calories come from saturated fats.

Well it's not a matter of body fat really. Dairy fat increases your risk of heart disease, which is by far the #1 killer in the world. It may suit you fine now, but later in life it'll probably catch up to you. I agree though, the taste is TO DIE FOR!

Whole milk is absolutely good for you. If it's raw. Pasteurization destroys all of the enzymes and good bacteria that is in milk and is what makes it bad for your digestive system. Saturated fat is not bad for you. Neither is cholesterol. Both are absolutely necessary for your body to function correctly and at its optimum capacity.

Cholesterol can increase testosterone; however, you CAN have high cholesterol that can result in negative effects on the body.

I didn't mean to imply that saturated fat and cholesterol are inherently bad, but they're both very easy to ingest in excessive amounts, and excessive amounts over an extended period of time can be deadly. For example, BIGPOPPATI said he drinks about gallon a day. That's 72 grams of saturated fat, from the milk alone. I'm no expert, but that sounds like excess to me. In my case I'm sure I could get away with drinking more, but I'd rather err on the side of caution when it comes to fatty dairy products.

MVP Cholesterol can increase testosterone; however, you CAN have high cholesterol that can result in negative effects on the body. High cholesterol is a result of something already being wrong with your cardiovascular system. Cholesterol is what your body uses to repair itself, as well as make hormones, etc. There's a saying out there that goes something like this: "You don't blame the cops for crime, just because they show up every time a crime is committed." The same goes for cholesterol, it's not to blame for heart disease and other cardiovascular problems. Those problems cause high cholesterol because your body needs it to fix those problems.
