OK starting routine?? - Monday, June 02, 2008 6:57 PM ( #1 )
Ok, so I just started taking my weightlifting more seriously, and wanted to see what you guys thought of the way I work out, and if I need to make any modifications.
I go to the gym twice a day. The first session is always a 500m. swim followed by 20 min of rowing, stairclimbing, or running.

Second sessions are as follows:
MON: Chest
Flat bench 3 sets 8-10
Incline Bench 3 sets 8-10
Cable Crossovers 3 sets 8-10
and then various chest machines until failure

TUES: Shoulders
Seated Overhead Press 3 sets 8-10
Arnolds 3 sets 8-10
Straight Arm Dumbell Raises 3 sets 8-10
Various machines to failure

WED: Legs/Lower Back
Squats 3 sets 8-10 (jump squats with dumbells in between sets)
Leg Extensions 3 sets 8-10
Leg Curls 3 sets 8-10
Deadlifts 3 sets 8-10 (Any other good lower back workouts?)
Lunges

Thurs: Biceps/Triceps/Forearms
Standing Barbell Curls 3 sets 8-10
Hammer Curls 3 sets 8-10
Preacher Curls 3 sets 8-10
Wrist Curls 3 sets 8-10
Skull Crushers 3 sets 8-10
Tricep Pulldowns 3 sets 8-10
Bench Dips 3 sets 15-20

Fri: Upper Back
Seated Rows 3 sets 8-10
Bent over rows 3 sets 8-10
Lat Pulldowns 3 sets 8-10
Various Machines

Sat and Sun: Cardio and Racquetball to give the muscles a bit of a rest

Any criticism is welcome...

I do abs about every other day after my cardio...I am trying to trim up. I am already a pretty slim guy, but I am also trying to build a little muscle. I am tired of having the skinny physique of a soccer player. I am 6'1" and weigh about 165 lbs...is there anything else you recommemd? oh, and thanks

its what you're doing, where you divide up muscle groups to certain days and hit them once or maybe indirectly twice a week.  The thing is when youre starting out its better to hit them more often like 3 times a week.  The best thing you could probably do is a fullbody routine 3 times a week with all of the basic heavy compound movements if you are a beginner.

HST is a good one.  I believe smoundzou made a variation of it that is good that you could try out.  I made my favorite routine ever a week or so ago.  Its in critique my training and its called homemade routine if you wanna check that out.

I think since you are beginning the HST routine would probably be better.  Mine is set up to achieve explosive strength and size with different reps/sets/weight but i think you could easily gain strenght and size from a simpler routine.  Yeah, HST man.

ah, thats cool. I am a former all-state high school soccer player myself. I have one more question...on the three day full body, what should I do on the in between days? I know that I need time for recovery, but it seems like I am just wasting days.

Not wasted at all, those are the days youre building the muscle, just use those days to relax and eat right.
