I cant seem to get the will to just get up and lift. I dont even do it every day, just 3 days out of the week, and i cant even do that.
It's not like i have a lot to do, i go to school, sleep when i come home, and then i end up going on the computer or watching tv all day. No matter how much i want to in my head, i just cant seem to get up and do it. I've got a routine from the people on this site, but i dont follow it. Usually i just sit down and start doing whatever comes to mind. I dont have free weights or a barbell or anything, i've got a machine, so wouldnt that make stuff easier? I WANT the motivation to do it more than anything! How does everyone do it?!

It sounds like you're working out at home. I can't work out well at home. It's too comfortable, too many distractions, too many alternatives. Go to a gym and you won't have anything else to do. You also won't want to luck like a pansy in front of everyone else so it'll push you to get down to business.

First thing I'd do is eat. Without the right foods, your body simply doesn't have any energy, so it's not surprising that you don't feel like working out- Besides, without food, working out won't do a damn thing really, so eating makes a hell of a lot of sense. Besides the protein, make damn sure you eat some whole grain brown rice- It's an excellent source of energy. You know the drill- Five or six meals a day. Even if you don't work out the first day, or the second day, once you're putting all that into your system, you'll find the desire and the energy real soon. Plus, you won't want to be doing all that eating for nothing.
Sure, I could tell you to look at some inspirational pics or whatever- But if you can eat like that, you'll be lifting again in no time.

I'd eat no problem if we actually had food. My mom will buy a whole months supply at once and then have everyone overeat so that we run out 1 week into the month, then she will buy taco bell or subway or order pizza for a lot of the other time. You know what just had for dinner? A bag of microwave popcorn. Yes, i said popcorn. So...that makes the total for today an apple, bowl of raman noodles, and a bag of popcorn....so thats what...like 900 calories at most? Yep..im screwed....i feel like im living by myself a lot of the time since my moms disabled and cant really do anything like work...she is so lazy also...i get it from her. I think that im going to be pretty much screwed until i move out and get a job.

A while ago i would eat a lot of unhealthy foods and i actually noticed a lot of fat around my belly and i was disgusted. and i was also tired of being the skinniest out of my friends, seeing as how they all play football and i dont. 5 months ago i went from 152 with probably 14% BF to where i am now. i am the biggest out of my friends and the decision to workout and eat right was the best decision of my life. the outcome is amazing and the compliments i get dont hurt either. Make a goal, put your mind to it, and eat an assload of chicken

Sounds a little more like depression to me now.
Sorry to hear your mother's disabled, but you can't blame your own laziness on her- Whether she's lazy or not is her choice, you've still got a choice of your own. Sure, being around a lazy person can rub off on you, if you let it- Keep in mind, being disabled, maybe she's got reasons for not getting off her ass, and if that's not the case, also keep in mind that being disabled can be enough for most people to not want to get off their ass.
Still, you're not disabled. I don't know how old you are, but if you're old enough to do so, maybe you could find a job to buy the food you want. If you're not old enough yet, then maybe you can help her out with the food shopping, and make sure you ration some of it out for yourself with her consent so that you can eat right more often. Believe it or not, moving out might not be the answer you're waiting for anyway- It's like this guy I work with who says he's going to work on losing his gut when the weather gets warmer. For the past five years. The bottom line is, you can do something about your situation. Yes, it's going to take work. But that work is going to pay off, as long as you actually do something about it- I mean, you started the thread asking about motivation and looking for helpful advice- But when advice is given, you had excuses. We can help you out here to a certain extent, but we can't lift the weights for you- We can't send you meals, and we can't help it if you're lazy. Those things, you have to take care of yourself. I do guarantee you though- If you eat right, the energy will be there. Also- If, when you get home from school you go straight to your home gym and crank out a twenty or thirty minute workout, you'll feel a hell of a lot better. Trust me- Before you do anything else- Hit the weights when you get home. It'll wake you up some, you can sleep later, and once you get warmed up it'll feel great and you know it. The next day, it'll be easier to jump right on the weights, and before you know it, you're off and running.

belive it or not, you can actually eat MORE food that is healthy and loose more weight then you would if you didnt eat any food at all. so eat! you can also get some protein powder and a multi vitamine for just general good health. if your serious about putting the weight off u may even consider a fat burner, but let that be your last choice if nothing else works, but other stuff will work if you try hard. just get on a tredmil or step machine for 15 min 2 times a week then go to 25 minutes 3 times a week and keep going up and up whenever u feel like you can go up. sometimes none of us really want to lift, we are tired, sore, getting a cold or whatever. you just have to make yourself get up and do it, just say you know hey look at myself is this how i really want to look? and if not then do somthing about it damnit. you can try listining to music to "pump you up" to work out, listen to somthing hard core. none of us can really help you too much besides encourage you to do this. its all in your head man, you gotta just do it. good luck, dont let yourself down.

My mom does have depression, so does my dad actually. I'm 13 and i went to a therapist last year to help me cope with my family. Even she said that my situation is pretty unique and there wasnt even anything she could do to make it easier on me. I realize that i'm full of excuses for not working out and everything, but sometimes its just so hard when i just see my mom sit around all day smoking...it just knocks all motivation right out.

well just think you dont ever wanna be like that, you dont wanna sit around and smoke and be unhealthy. get up and do somthing about it and save a few years of your life for being healthy, trust me, itll pay off in the end when sum1 else dies before you and u wish u could rub it in their face cause u were healthy. its proove to add years to your life.just drink an energy drink, listin to your favorite music and lift some weights, even if its not heavy weights at first. start with a low intensity and go up from there. good luck man

I'm sorry to hear about your family condition.  I can gaurentee you this: If you find something to do, may it be bodybuilding or chess playing, you will become happier.  If you join a club at school or play a sport, you will meet people and have fun.  I can promise you, you'll be a happier person if you get more involved.  If you want another way to look at it, think about how proud you'd make your mother to show her how dedicated and discipline you are.  You might even modivate her with your sucsesses.

I'll be pretty straight up.  I'm 14 - turning 15 - and I do know what it's like to be depressed.  The truth is, the more time you spend on your ass, the more depressed you become.  I'm sure your familiar with the feeling that your so bored with yourself that you want to die.  I had that feeling a lot.  My grades dropped and I felt like ****.  But one day, it just hit me.  It was time for a change.  It took some time, but i made more friends, got more involved with kids in my school and community, and than I was cured.

I hope you got something out of this.

Well everyone has their own story to tell, and our minds are all individual and unique to ourselves. We are all a product of genetics and enivronment so we all deal with things differently and become affected by things differently , so therefore it's wrong to say ' i dealt with this larger problem better then you dealt with this smaller problem.' I think if you are feeling depressed and by the sounds of it in a particularly uninspiring environment......well i cannot recommend a solution, but all i can say is try and get into a routine with weight lifting. Of all the times i have been low, and believe me there has been more then anyone could possibly imagine - my only outlet has been exercise and weight lifting. It is a positive way of taking out your frustrations in life and i urge you to try and develop it as a routine.

To motivate myself I just powerlift. This gives me a reason to lift...so when my lifts do go down or when i do gain the unexpected weight or loose to much I care...because my wiining depends on it. Have ar eason and u will love it. Whether it be to get in shape...look good...loose weight....a bodybuilding comp...a strong man comp...a powerlifting comp. Anything helps.

I know it has been a couple of weeks since this thread has any replies, but I just found it.

jakej, I am very sorry to hear about your situation. I hope things are better since you last posted. Depression does run in families in general, and the teen years often are filled with depressed feelings. A lack of motivation is something that everyone who lifts weights has, at some point. Results breed motivation. I agree with No Quarter, you need to find another place to workout. I spent a lot of money and bought the contents of an entire gym that went out of business, I built a huge room and made a home gym. I had a real hard time staying focused when I am at home, I still had to go to the gym to workout. I sold all the equipment. The gym provides me with motivation. You also can find a workout partner, which helps. This will give you a place to get away from the dysfunction at home. Become a gym rat! I know you said the gym wasn't an option. Why is it not an option? Is it money? Is there not a gym around? Is there a YMCA around? If you were to go to just about any gym in the country, especially the locally owned ones, they would work something out with you. Some gyms let teens clean up in exchange for memberships. I feel confident that any YMCA would give you a membership. Please talk to your school counselor, tell him or her all of this. Go to your school's athletic director, tell him your situation. Go to a church or synagogue and talk to some one. There are many programs available, however, YOU will have to get the ball rolling. You don't have to accept this situation as it is. If a young person came to my gym, and explained the situation you were in, we would take that person under our wing, get them a membership and help in all areas of his or her life. It is time to break the pattern of your family. You have taken the first step, now get moving. You have people here who care. Get some help from someone.  Refuse to give in to your depression.

Bodybuilding is a great anti-depressant. It also gives you confidence and helps your self esteem. I have done it for almost thirty years. I can't wait until my ten year old can start!

With respect,

Intense

Note to KEFE and Carl: Boys, behave!

I agree with ironraider, for me if i dont do what i usually do like, eat heathyly or train i look bak soon later and it feels like im cheating my self because of this. Also, the easy thing to do would be to say "oh wel, my mums disabled, my dads depressed theres no chance for me :(" but there is! dont take the easy way out and good look, trust me i used to be skinny and weak and after getting into lifting seeing the results, well im an addict Smile Pluss, the feelings u get from acomplishing a goal or looking in the mirror (i do alot) and thinking "thats my body" makes all the hard work worth while, good look man
