No Food is better than Junk Food? - Saturday, May 02, 2009 6:31 AM ( #1 )
Some of us work night shifts and it is not always possible to get healthy stuu to eat at 2 in the morning. Things available are the Tea/Coffee from the machine with artificial milk, chips and French Fries.

Should I just eat the junk in small quantities to satiate the hunger or just go hungry. Keep sipping on water for about 7-8 hours until regular food is available.

yea i know a lot of guys have the same issue. i tried packing food from home. but i barely get to sleep, so it is a chore doing it everyday.

not an impossibility to do, but just one of the things that get boring wth time that you just stop doing it.

Meals can be a little tough, but if you are just talking about snacks, bring in fruit and raw trail mix.  That's what I do for eating between meals at work.

yea, it's the meals im talking about. i dont snack. so it's not a problem. but meals are tough to plan since i dont have a fixed schedule.

i bumped up the HIIT cardio intensity hoping to burn off some of the stored fat, but that just increased the soreness levels of the body and made the knees and ankles sore. so im not gonna do it anymore. im clueless. sitting and getting fat.

Do you have a fridge you can use at work?

nope. no fridge. im thinking about making a lot of light sandwiches and storing them in the fridge at home. so that every 2 days i replenish them.

i carry milk and nuts in air/temperature insultated containers at present. but that is not equivalent to solid food.

milk actually contains a great ratio  of protein/carbs/fat. Nuts are also very good. I would try and pack a couple  PB sandwich and a protein shake along with some milk and nuts. Just eat something ever 2-3 hours and you will be fine. Just make sure you are eating well when you do have time to cook.

Food is better than no food most of the time unless it is completely processed and contains little nutritional value.

Even then I'd say that's better than nothing, at least your body is consuming that rather than itself.

I believe that crap food is better than no food.

And you can still take some stuff with you to work like a protein shake, fruits, nuts - there's 1 meal right there.

If you have a problem with preparing a sandwich, take a few extra steps. Make it the night before. Wake up 5-10 minutes earlier to prepare it.

Re:No Food is better than Junk Food? - Saturday, May 02, 2009 10:44 PM ( #12 )
My take on this:
1.U can keep cornfalkes on ur desk,or  oatflakes...just have to carry milk every day.
2.On ur weekends..boil chicken and shred it up and everyday before leaving take 2 bread slices ,add pb and shredded boil chikcen..an awesome sandwhich in 5 mins with a perfect mix of carbs/fat/protien
3.as evry1 suggested ,fruits and milk.
4.If ur workplace canteen has idli/dosa[as ur indian]...for other ppl this is a very healthy indian dish....the healthiest food one can have outside home.

I think if u are such a harworker working out so early in the morning u can just give 5 more mins to ur diet coz afterall bbding is nothing with out diet

Best of luck

Re:No Food is better than Junk Food? - Sunday, May 03, 2009 5:19 AM ( #14 )
...And if you want to take it seriously, you have to be obsessive about getting your ~6 meals a day, every day, without failure.
You should have at least a rough idea of the amount of calories you need a day to achieve your goals. Junk food might provide you with much of those calories and so is better than no food at all but, you could be filling up with meals which lack in the necessary nutrients to maintain growth. Missing meals causes the body to go into fasting mode so that it stores any given foods as fat rather than putting it towards growth. You must always be supplying the body with food so that it never thinks it has to prepare for a period of fasting.

If you want to take the training seriously you need to understand the attitude you have to take towards your munchings. Make sure that everyday you know where your 6 meals are coming from and what will be in it. Take more time to prepare meals for the day/week. Some weekends I roast pork, beef and poultry to last a week so that I have a nice big steak for lunch rather than eating canteen foods. Boiling a little bit of veg, pasta or rice in the morning to go with it only takes 5-10 minutes. Its funny to think of the size of my bag I take into work every morning.
Eating like a monster can be expensive so stick to the very basics. Buy in bulk and prepare foods yourself. Try out making mix vegatable or fruit smoothies. Boiled eggs store well in the fridge and serve as a very good source of protein and fats. It is very handy to have your kitchen/work desk well stocked up at all times to never be without a quick meal if needed otherwise that is when you would revert to the junk or just going without.
When I am without a meal I have a meal replacement shake instead. The one I use is a very good one, its expensive by the box but works out £1.60 per go which is a whole lot better in many ways than spending ~£5 on canteen grub.

Come on man, crispy creme donut > no food?? :)

Seriously, it only contains mostly sugar. What does some sugar do to you?

Like I said, if it has basically no nutritional value and does more harm than good then I wouldn't eat it. Your muscles are not going to vanish if you don't eat for 4 hours. Just make up the calories later and don't skip meals regularly.

The donut is a perfect example. White flower, refined sugar, deep fried....

I bring boiled egg whites to work. Pretty convenient, and has rich amino profile. I suggest you do that, along with some wheat bread.

Re:No Food is better than Junk Food? - Monday, May 04, 2009 10:00 AM ( #22 )
I'd eat the junk just so I wasn't hungry anymore.

This is minor stuff though that you shouldn't be worrying about.

It's years and years of consistent training and dieting that will give you the results you are looking for.  Minor drawbacks such as this one are really minor in comparison to the bigger picture (the years of constant training...)

Ya if you are hungry by all means...eat. I was talking more about if you were super concerned about your diet. And in that case you should be worried enough to pack a meal or two.

Re:No Food is better than Junk Food? - Monday, May 04, 2009 2:16 PM ( #25 )
just found out that the milk in the oats has gone bad :|

i drank a mouth of that stuff before i found out. almost puked. no more milk from now on. shucks!

anyways, yea, i am very concerned because i my fat levels are at 20.19%. fat in lower belly. only top two cuts are visible on my abs. and it's been that way for ages now. im sick of seeing only that. im breaking my balls since last month with heavy training and cardio. so i dont want to lose an edge just because i screwed my diet. im running on 4and a half to 5 hours sleep nowadays. that sucks too. hence this thread.

anyways i hope i lose some 5% - 7% fat by end on june. target is 12-15.

I miss dirty bulking. I imagine it can be frustrating being an ectomorph with the lightning metabolic rate but at least you can eat what you want.

I work 24/7.

So if I happens to be in the evening 6:30 shift, which it usually is,

Wake up at 4, Eat a 3 course meal with a load of rice with cereals and curds and stuff. It's Massive.

then at 8 i have dinner made of oats and milk with nuts and stuff.

12 o clock again i have tea with few slices of bread with butter and jam and salad made of cucumber and carrots

4:30 i will be home. will eat drink some more milk and a handful of nuts [almonds, walnuts etc.. ]

Hit the gym at 5:30 or something.

after training [60 mins -75 mins], i do a 10 minute HIIT cardio. just 2 sprints followed by jogging.

in my non-training days i have started doing 30 mins of slow cardio since last week.

after gettting back home i have a big bowl of oats with milk and nuts again.

Now i have been having very good strength gains. but nothing else changes.

right now, i am almost 24 yrs old and i am 178cms tall with BW = 74 kilos/164 pounds.
