I know it will be impossible to put a finger on an exact date or time frame. But, as a general rule of thumb, is there any way of saying when gains in size are no longer considered to be newby gains? You know, the quick and rapid growth seen during the beginning when someone starts training for the first time? Like 6 months, 1 year, or two years? I know it might be next to impossible to answer, but wanted to go fishing anyways. Hopefully I made even a little sense!

i would say less than 6 months. heck.. i'd even around 3 months actually. if you're dedicated to your lifting and are eating right. after 3 months... i would venture to say that all gains made are not "newb gains". but that's just my opinion...

Mine lasted just about 5 months. I worked out very hard for the first 5 months but had a diet that was outrageously laid back, I still gained like 30 pounds though. At 5 months though my gains almost completely stopped for like 3 months (It took me that long to get serious about my diet).

I'm not sure about muscle gains but in the past three months I'm starting to see some improvements and there not stopping. As far as strength goes I would have to say the first two or three months. The first time I worked out I improved by like 40 to 50 pounds on most lifts in like two or three months. Then I stopped and now since I've started again I've gone up by 70 or 80lbs in like 3 months. This past month though it has slowed down to the point where I wouldn't consider them newb gains. Also look at this chart and compare your gains to it. www.exrx.net/Testing/WeightLifting/StrengthStandards.htm

i got a friend of mine to start bodybuilding and in the past year he has made some serious gains. by gains i mean size and physique wise. his strength hasn't increased in a long time. especially his bench and squat. but he still grows like mad. im curious on when he's gonna slow down! haha his BF% dropped alot also. im thinkin he's just got some good genetics :P

they dont really suddenly stop, they more taper off so idk what you would consider nooby gains but to me it seemed to last like 8 months as i gained 40 lbs in that time, hitting plateaus along the way that were all seen through by just eating more it seems.

ORIGINAL: RobertN Thanks for the link, leg beast. That's some cool info to have! I wouldn't worry about newb gains and stuff like that, just have a realistic goal or standard to compare yours gains with. I like that link because those are very realistic goals to compare yourself with.

After two years of lifting if your diet sucks you won't continue to grow.

I've been lifting for a year and I am barely at the novice level for 181lb. body weight, according to those charts. I still feel like I am pathetic though.
