New to dieting - Tuesday, December 21, 2004 9:58 PM
OK I am new to the forum so a brief history first.

I worked out when I was young all the way untill I was 27. Got married took 2 years off gained about 30lbs in those 2 years. My metabolism left me as well. I started working out in March of this year. When I joined the gym I was 250lbs ( I am 6'3 ). I am now at about 235lbs. I look allot better than when I started but I am not losing allot of fat from my midsection and not getting that cut look I once had. I know now that before I had good metabolism so I didnt need to diet but I realize now that I do. I am happy with my weight lifting and have even taken courses in the past so I know what to do about that side of it but have no clue what to do regarding my diet.

Currently I workout 5 days a week with weights:
Day 1: Back and Abs- Cardio x 40 mins
Day 2: Chest - Cardio x 40 mins
Day 3: Legs and Abs
Day 4: Shoulders and Calves - Cardio x 30mins
Day 5: Arms - Cardio x 30mins
Day 6: Rest
Day 7: Rest
Repeat

Currently I eat:
8am Breakfast-Oatmeal
9am Workout
11 am - Post workout Protein Shake
12pm - Lunch maybe some Chile
2pm - Maybe a muffin
5pm - Dinner could be anything from Steak and Potatoes to Chicken and Vegtables or even something like Lasagna
7pm - Snack (not healthy maybe some chips)

I know I need to cut out the snacking, I also drink Coke I have to stop that as well. I also drink coffee in the morning should I stop that as well.

What about other supplements should I start taking Glutamine and some BCAA? I do take a mutli vitamin everyday.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks
Bryan

I wouldn't bother with supplements until you get your diet sorted out. You need to be eating 5-6 complete meals every day. Get yourself an Accumeasure or have your BF% done at the gym so you can find out your lean body mass. Multiply LBM times 1.14 to get your protein gram intake for each day. Multiply that times four and subtract that number from your total calorie allowment for the day. If you don't know your total calorie requirement, just figure about 2500-3000 and subtract your protein. Divide that number by eight to get your carb intake in grams. Divide the same number by eighteen to get fat requirement. If you would like a great program that works all of this out for you go to Optimum Anabolics. You can also check out my Journal in the Online Training Journal Section of DB.com. MDA1125 also has a review of the program in the Review section. Good luck!

optimum anabolics is a big ad. though navigator is right that you should go ahead and figure out what you caloric intakes should be, those number do fluxuate quite a lot and you might do well to visit a local dietician.
looking at your diet, i have to point out that chili and pastas like lasagna probably are not best right now for you to lose body fat, eating multiple small meals a day will definately help and reverting to more fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products. Also, try eating a variety of proteins, i.e. eggs, nuts, seafood.

Congradulations on deciding to get back into shape!

Why does everyone keep calling me Navigator? A navigator is a guy that people hire when they're too incompetent to know where they're going. Naviators don't need to ask for directions. They would rather have that extra 200lb for fuel to go fast.

Naviator: Spoken like a true left-seater!

My plane was a S2F "Tracker", now a museum piece at Pensacola.

I'm a helo bub, so we do everything backwards, including flying in reverse.

That bird was replaced by the E-2/C-2, wasn't it? 10,000 lb load. Yep, the Big Iron (mighty 53) get's twice that, but who's counting, right?
