Im new to this forum and have a few questions. First I am going to boot camp for the Marine Corps in about 7 months and i want to be very perpared physically, Right now I am in good shape, I do not do much body building but I am a runner and do not want to gain to much weight, how can I work my arms out so that I can be prepared for the rigours of boot camp without gaining too much weight? also i have been working on pullups alot as of late and am up to 12, im a pretty thin kid ( 6 feet, 140ish) i was wondering if any of you have advice to work on pull ups. Second, Crunches, As of right now my best is 130 crunches in 2 mintues which is good but my abs are weak i am just so light and my chest is so small that crunches are easy for me, what kind of exersises can i do to strengthen my crunches Diet, I eat very randomly and dont get into a good diet plan untill track season comes around any ideas for a diet that will help me stay in good health but will not make me gain weight i really want to keep my 5 minute mile and gaining alot of weight will kill that time,. Any ideas on leg work that will help with running, i want to get my one mile time to about a 430 so i can place at states this year, any information would be great thank yuo.

Hey man, welcome to the forum. I really admire you for joining the Marines and I wish you lots of luck. I don't have the best of advice on preperation, but I can almost bet that if you go to Bodybuilding.com... you could probably do a search on Marine training, or how to prepare for the marines. I remeber seeing articels every now and then on that sort of thing... they have to be out there.

OORAH, poolee! I'm enlisted too, leaving next summer as well. I'm so glad I came across your post, because Pullups and pushups are some of the things I've been helping other enlistees with the most! I enlisted in July with 12 pullups, my max these days is around 23. My crunches in 2min are at around 118. Getting your arms in shape for boot (SPECIFICALLY boot, not for weightlifting or anything else) At boot camp, most of the arm work you'll do is manual, without equipment. You don't really use weights at boot. So I'd say 90% of the performance you need in boot camp has to do with endurance as opposed to power (not to say that power doesn't matter!). Just pushup.. all the time. Push push push. If you're watching TV and not doing anything, just get down and do some. Change up your pushup stance: push wide-arm, push in front of your body, do diamonds, push with the tips of your middle fingers touching, and with your hands forward and directly beneath your armpits.. make sure to mix it up, because pushups are one of the main courses in boot. Also, learn to count your pullups as four-count repetitions. That is, you start in the down position, and then up, down, up, down = one pushup. If you've PT'd with Marines yet, then you already know this. more pullups!! The way I was taught (what got me from 12 to 23) is, anytime you're doing reps of pullups, when you get down, crank out 10, 20, or 30 pushups: whichever amount is a good strong number, but won't burn you out. One of the best things you can do is have a pullup bar in your own home. That's what I have, and, well.. results are coming pretty fast. increasing your speed Run in the hills. If you have hills near you, small, rolling ones, definitely run on them. they say that (at MCRDSD, anyway) the only time you will run on a flat track is when you're running an IST, PFT, or moto-run (the last run before you get your title) Running in the hills strengthens your ankles, works out more of your leg muscles, and multiplies the cardio. Hope all this helped, at least a little. By the way, where do you live? Just wondering whether I'll see ya over in San Diego in the summer. :)
