Hello, I am new here and need some help. I am almost to the point that I'm going to get a personal trainer, but hopefully someone here can help me. I am a 5'11", 22 year old guy that has weighed 135lbs for 6 years now. I just simply can't gain weight. Until this weekend I was just living with it, but I have had enough. I NEED TO BULK UP! I know nothing about what I need to do to bulk up. I don't just want to get stronger, but get bigger... bigger biceps, forarms, chest, back, ect. I know my nutrition needs some work and I need to get into some type of free weight training. Does anyone have any suggestions for me and if not mabye a suggestion of a good book? Thanks, Zach

Why reccomend a program that clearly states you need years of experience for someone that clearly says that he's new?

NOQuarter It says the routine should be done 3-4 years break in training which means if a begginer is looking to pack on good mass, then 3-4 years is suggested of this type or simliar training scheme. But he didn't mention wether how long he has experience with weights or not. If he didn't have any experience at all. Then 3x8 for 6 months should be fine but with same concepts and exercises apply within the 5x5/4x6 scheme to get to know his body as well to know the feel of these compound lifts. Zach: Also zach great books to read are "complete keys to progress" and "dinosaur training" hope this help bud Goodluck with training.

Huh? I read that as it is for beginners, and those who have had a 3-4 year break from training... JHZ, welcome to DBB! Firstly, i would recommend stopping any thoughts you have of bulking up, as you are very likely to rush ahead in a flury of enthusiasm and either do the wrong thing or hurt yourself... I'm also 22, i'm about 5'11+3/4 (i pretend im 6' lol) but i weight 200 lbs...I'm going to try and slim down to around 180 by the end of June, see what happens... Anyway, enough about me, back to you... I would recommend reading the messages on this site. If you click on the nutrition section, and then the 'best of section,' Danmirage has made some great posts about gaining muscle and losing fat...diet related. Then have a look at a lot of routines in the training section and see which one you think you will feel comfortable with. Personally i would recommend the routine posted by PureNatural a few posts above to begin with for say 8 weeks. Then take a whole week off and do nothing. Then maybe try another 8 weeks of this but with high intensity. Basically, when you are starting out, your body reacts and changes faster, so you will most likely gain a lot of muscle to start before you plateau. Then you need to up the intensity. It's all well and good saying this however it is all useless without the correct amount of sleep and correct diet. All this info can be found on this site. To summarize, i think to start you should look at training heavily 3 times a week, using 5 sets of 5 reps (5x5) and on each day do one of the three major compound lifts (bench press, deadlift, squats) as detailed in the post by PureNatural. Take your nutritional info from the posts i have recommended (sorry for no links, im on dial up until tuesday and it blows). BUT...and this is a rather BIG BUT!!! You are just starting out. Take 4-6 weeks to prepare your body for what is ahead. You cannot build a house without foundations.... Take 4-6 weeks to really work on your core stability, to really work on your flexibility, especially in your legs and shoulders, and perhaps most importantly of all, work and work and work and work on getting correct weight lifting form. Not only will this result in less injuries but will help with your muscular gains. I'm sorry if this isn't the info you want to hear, it is however a key step on the path to a great looking body. I'm talking from experience. I neglected all of what i have told you here and am now paying for it. I almost have to go back to the start . Building a great body will take time but with dedication, patience, sleep, good diet, and high intensity, it is well within your reach! Good Luck!

Metabolisms can be beaten, you're just going to have to start eating alot of the right foods. A quick metab can be pretty helpful when gaining muscle as it'll help you stay lean while you grow.

Have a look here at some of the threads for diet metabolsim questions and worries. If you do all these activities regularly then you will most likely have a good core. Make sure your flexibility is good though...especially calfs, achilles tendons, and hamstrings.... Any other questions feel free to ask....diet is important so take the time to get it right!

Should I focus on eating only the right things in quantity or just eating everything in my path? I am telling everyone here that I will need to eat minimum, 6 meals a day. I eat 4 already, have for years and have'nt gained a pound. What I'm asking is what is the most important factor, quantity or quality?
