New & Weak
-
Thursday, May 26, 2005 4:31 AM
Greetings. I'm pretty much new to weight lifting and bodybuilding. My experience only goes back to one semester of weight training in my sophomore year of high school. I'm age 19, weigh 160 lbs and now a sophomore in college. I'm weak by all standards and want an intervention. Last time I worked out was about a year ago and my max bench was about 120 lbs. I have no clue where to start. My main goals are to gain muscle and strength in a fast period of time. The only thing I have are a pair of 20 lb dumbells in my room collecting dust and I have a few gyms by my house. Can anyone shed some light on where I should start?

Let's see.. a real quick overview for ya Dieting: -search online for a caloric intake calculator based on your weight, age whatever and figure out how many calories you should be intaking a day -add about 300-500 more calories to that so you know for sure you're gaining weight -eat foods high in protein, and intake about 1.5g of protein per pound of weight (ex: tuna, eggs, egg whites, chicken breasts, whole weat breads, lean meats, fish, etc.) -try to eat somewhere around 6 [medium] meals a day to boost your metabolism and such Training: there's no golden routine or anything but here's what I do and I have seen some pretty good results -join a gym, it's worth it if you're gonna become serious about this.. if you're gonna quit in a month, don't bother -I go to the gym 5 days a week and take the weekends off or run outside -dedicate each day of the week to a certain muscle group (ex: Monday-Arms, Tuesday-Chest, Wednesday-Legs, Thursday-Shoulders, Friday-Back) -throw in cardio and abs every once in a while in there too, I just do em when I feel like it. -the reason you spread the routine out is to give your muscles enough time to build/grow... contrary to popular belief, muscles only grow while they are resting, not while you're working them out -don't worry about how heavy the weights are that you're lifting or how big the people around you are... concentrate on proper form with weights you feel comfortable in Supplements: most are waste of money if you're already dieting correctly, BUT -if you have the money, I'd go out and buy some Whey Protein for pre and post workout and before going to bed -I personally don't use it, but people have been getting great results with Creatine -multivitamins are good for you and your muscles as well You're not gonna get huge overnight... it'll take a couple weeks for you to notice any results... just to let you know.
