**New lifter need much diretion** - Friday, February 06, 2009 8:39 PM ( #1 )
I have been lifting for a few months now and am not getting the results i want and that is probably due to a lack of knowledge and i am hoping this website will help me out in that category alot!!

I'm 5'8 133-137 lbs 19yrs male

What ive been doing is trying to get a lean and cut muscular body and not a huge body builder physique but am having trouble getting toned. I feel that i am getting stronger but the definintion and becoming cut is not happening. This problem could be due to diet or a number of things i am not sure.

Currently i am running at least 4 times a week mainly HIIT style walk,sprint,walk,sprint,walk,sprint... and lifing 4 times a week also. As for diet i am doint a low carb, medium-low caorie as a way to hopefully drop fat and have the muscle i do have SHOW but this doesnt seem to be working. So what i am asking is whats the best way for me to gain muscle whiles still losing fat at the same time to achieve my goal of a lean muscular body.

any help or suggestions regarding diet, supplements, or routing will be greatly appreciated!

You need to gain muscle before you can get toned, you can't tone what you don't have. You say 'don't want to get huge just toned'. So for starters I am going to point out what needs to be pointed out to pretty much everyone who comes here. Lifting weights will not get you huge. It takes years and years of training to get huge, so forget that. Secondly whilst all that running will be good for cardio fitness, then unless you want to keep a good cardio fitness all you are doing is burning calories that could be used otherwise to build muscle, diet is the key to what you want. You want to spend maybe just 20 minutes warming up with a run before your workout but really no more. To bulk and lose fat at the same time really is a hard feat, so I would really recommend just all out bulking and then dropping some BF at a later stage, but if you are adamant you want to try both then you want a high prot, medium carb, low fat diet. You need to check with a calorie calculator as to how much you should be eating, and then put together a routine suitable for you. (I'd recommend a 3 day full body). But overall, understand that at the moment you are a canvas with nothing on it, you need to put something on it before you have anything to work with.

Yeah, dropping fat isn't gonna be going for you right now. I suggest you work on gaing muscle mass, as it will help set the tone for your metabolism to loose wait in the future.

Also, being 135ish, 5'8, and 19, I doubt you'll be needing to loose to much fat, unless your like 20+ % body fat

Ya i only want to drop like 2-3 pounds because genetically the only place i build up fat is around my gut like i have some chest definition but a small gut, i am in no way fat or rail thin i would say i have an average build just  a little gut.  when i put in all my info on the calorie calculator it should i should be eating around 2750 calories a day and im probably at least a few hundred below that maybe more so im going to have to do some research to see what type of diet/nutritional program i should start. Also would it be easier to drop the few pounds first then begin the bulking up stage since its such a low amount of weight i want to drop or if i start a higher calorie diet as a way of gaining muscle will that help me naturally shed the few pounds.

Again any help will be great because i have little or no knowledge about proper body nutrition stuff

With men, the last area that they usually lose fat is their gut.  In other words, losing 2 or 3 pounds is going to do next to nothing for your appearance.
Bench- 315 Squat- 345 Dead-  515

Total- 1175

Just forget about your gut, eat loads, train hard and when youve gained about 40lbs of muscle, then you can start thinking about your fat.
