New To Training and Forum - Sunday, November 02, 2008 1:13 PM ( #1 )
Hi everyone.  I'm new to training and have a few questions.

First this is what I am looking to do... I dont want to get huge.  Just fit.  I am 20 years old.  About 6'2".  And weight about 190 lbs.  I seem to mainly gain weight on my stomach and chest.  I am not fat, but would like to see my abs show through.  I know I have to watch what I eat but is weight lifting enough?  I dont think Id be able to do a lot of cardio because of my schedule and my job is pretty tiring.  I was thinking about boxing (as in getting a punching bag) because I could do this at home. But I heard that cardio can prevent muscle gain.  What is the best thing to do, and when should I do my cardio?

Also,  I just have a bench and free weights at home.  I cannot afford a gym right now.  Is what I have at home enough?

Any feedback is appreciated even if its more than just answering my questions.

Thanks!

For your info, people who are 'huge' and people who are 'fit' train using the same methods... its the diet and the fineprints that define each of them.

To get abs to show, your bodyfat would have to be below 10%... How to measure it? Try searching using the search toolbar.

I know I have to watch what I eat but is weight lifting enough?  I dont think Id be able to do a lot of cardio because of my schedule and my job is pretty tiring.  I was thinking about boxing (as in getting a punching bag) because I could do this at home. Weight training is definitely enough. At least it worked for me. Do yourself a favour and do read through some of the articles and questions that other members ask here. If you can't go through cardio cos you've got a tiring job, what makes you think boxing would get the job done? You want the body, you gotta work for it. Reschedule your time to fit a workout in throughout the week. There are probably things that you can sacrifice to make time for this.

Also,  I just have a bench and free weights at home.  I cannot afford a gym right now.  Is what I have at home enough?
Depends how much weights you have and if you know what you're doing.
It's times like these, you learn to live again...
