Thanks Linda. Never quite knew how to worry myself in to a straddle split. Always wanted to be able to do one though. Now I think i can actually get there!

I cannot believe how populare that simple little video is!!!!!!  It has got the most hits in less than 24 hrs and I was poking about but could not find anything like it, which helps anyone who cannot already do the splits.
wow, I had no idea sometihng I take for granted was such a popular goal for others........it really makes me appreciate that I CAN do them especially with me dwelling so much lately on what I cannot.......life lesson???intersting how they happen.

yea a lot of people want to be able to do them, and not just girls really.  I dont really want to be able to do the splits but i want the flexibility all around and trying to do the splits i would help a lot

I used to be able to the regular ones, even at about 200 lbs, I am still close enough that if I worked on it I could get them again with out too much issue, or "coaching", but the straddle, no way!

Working on both will help my flexibility for Kung Fu, and satisfy a old quirky goal. So with the video, sounds like a summer project for me .

Got tips on getting in to lotus position??

I just had to say doing 20 minutes of straddle stretches is a BIACH!
 
I timed the holds and everything...

hardway........where do you feel the pull more when in lotus.....back?  hams?  groin?  or the muscles in the feet by the ankles???

can you do half lotus on both sides and btw wft is a yogi.........lets see if she chimes in.........

I guess sticking point #1 is Hips/groin, I think I have very tight hip flexors, I feel it in the ball of my hip joint as well, then yeah, my ankles are tight... I didn't realise that until you mentioned the possibility (and after taking off my shoes at work and trying to get into the position).

Half lotus no... If I have a leg out straight I can bend my other leg on top, but not if it is underneath... again the hips, they don't want to splay out that way.

I am thinking that staddle strech progression should help me some, but getting me all the way I don't know.

For someone who doesn't train for flexibility (although I have at different points and times, and for a significant time period, never seriously though), I am fairly flexible, but my hips, in positions like that, even indian style (Yeah I can at least pull that off ), always a hard time for me.

okay, use gravity, a wall and ankle weights.  get your self, legs up, ass against a wall, legs against the wall....can you get yourself in the shape of an L with your LOW BACK on the ground but ass is against the wall????

the idea is to then split the legs with ankle weights on so you essentially are sitting in a straddle sit but like your sitting on the wall and back is against floor....crotch is facing ceiling.....I should do a vid for this one..........its very useful but first test and lmk........it will help me better understand your restrictions and then maybe why and then what to do.

Checked it twice wasn't sure the crotch faced the ceiling but, no problem, I can get get a good L.

okay good so to help the stretching, you do this with ankle weights on, split legs....thats when crotch faces ceiling.....I just wanted to make sure you can get form.
let ankle weights pull legs open, breath and relax into it, then after 20 secs, resist it a bit for 6 secs, like pnf......then repeat........gravity and ankle weights help the pull safely.
