Hi,

I decided to go back into being fit and to tone my body. I am 45 yo, I was 192 lb at the begining of last June but I went into a hard workout schedule, and by the end of September I managed to drop my weight to 164 lbs. Basically, I gradually got to do the following 3 to 4 times a week: 60 minutes on an elliptical cross trainer (550 to 600 calories loss), then stresh out, then abs exercies, then weighlifting (one day legs and shoulders, one day chest and biceps, and one day back and tricep; all 3 sets each of 4 execises of 12 to 8 reps of increasing weights). Also, I was limiting my calories to like 1100 to 1200 calories a day for 5 days a week.

However, by mid September I noticed that not only was I loosing fat but also muscles. My body was getting slimmer but not toned. Also, I wa always so so tired most of the time.

So I researched (read lots of posts at the Losing Fat forum) and then readjusted my diet and workout where now my calories intake is around 1800/2000 a day. Also, I lift before my cardio exercises. I have maintained my weight to 164lbs but I am noticing muscles and toning taking place.

My questions to some of you experienced folks on these forums are the following:

1. Does being 45 yo require a different workout and diet in order to see postive changes.
2. I bought Nitro-Tech and I took few servings, but I got bloatted, affected my sleep where I could not go to sleep easily, muscles felt inflated but sort of deflated after two days, and also made my skin a bit itchy at times. I drank lots of water but effects remained. Is this stuff safe? I researched the web and there aren't any site to discuss the negative side effects of this product. It seems that all sites are geared to marketing of this stuff.
3. Are supplements effective for men my age or do they have negative imapct?
4. Last recommendation for supplements for my age will be welcome. Also, recommendation to sites showing the negatice side effects of some of the supplements will be appreciated.

I do appreciate any feedback, and I do really enjoy visiting the forums here.

Cheers

Jay

I would not do cardio on lifting days, but if it works for you, fine. Now to some opinions:

1. I don’t think so. I started working out as anybody else without the slightest idea on dieting and still made cool mass gains and fat loss. Then I switched to eating 8 times per day and that really makes a big, big difference even if you don’t count each calorie. On the other hand, I’m not yet 45, but at 39, I think I’m almost there.

2. I don’t like that stuff and think there’s too much hype about that. Perhaps good for advanced guys, but right now: no, thank you. So I can’t really give any opinion here.

3. / 4. Supplements are just that: supplements. I don’t believe that protein or creatine will have a negative impact, on the contrary. Creatine works well and is great for some impressive size gains within a very short time. Other than those two is overkill for the average gym rat, if you ask me.

You probably are losing muscle and fat because, in part, your exercise routines are too long.  Can you separate your cardio session from your weight lifting session by half a day? (e.g., do lifting in the a.m., and cardio in the p.m.)?
