Need serious help regarding pecs
-
Sunday, March 27, 2005 4:50 PM
I'm 18 and I've just started weight lifting maybe 3 months ago, I've seen a slight improvement in my arms, but my pecs are really the problem. I can barely bench more than 50 pounds. I'm not sure what my max is but I tried 90 once and I couldn't raise the damn bar. I do pec flys with dumbells and I cannot feel it in my chest at all, I bench my normal ammount and my arms get tired before I even begin to feel a burn in my chest. How can I seriously get my pecs ripped and is there something I'm doing wrong because I can't feel any of these excersizes in my chest at all! I follow diagrams in illustrated books and my form is right compared to the diagrams and descriptions. Thanks for your time Forgot to mention I'm very skinny about 128 pounds and 5"11

I can't feel any of these excersizes in my chest at all! I know what youre talking about. Try push ups, they will work and you will feel the burn trust me.

Make sure you rest atleast 3-4 days. do 3 sets of 8 reps on: Incline, Decline, Flat, and Dumbell Flys I never feel a "burn" just a tired in my arms and chest. But I got big pecks, so I know that I am doing something right, and I started out at probably, oh, 70 pounds 8 times, and now im at 135 8 times, tomorrow i get to raise it to 140 im so happy :)

Perhaps the word burn wasn't used right, I don't feel tired in my chest at all when I'm doing it or after. I haven't busted out the measuring tape but I'm sure that its around 22 inches. I've been reading this forum all day and other websites and some books on weightlifting I bought and I think I might have found my problem. Alot say do sets of 4-6 or 6-8 reps. Now I was under the impression that the more reps the better, so I've been doing say 50 pounds for 25 reps at a time. Is it better to do more weight with fewer reps or more reps with less weight?

I have same problem, my triceps feels like molten lava before i feel it in my pecs... Maybe i need to work out my tricps more first so they can handle the more weight my chest desires?

It is better to do more weight with fewer reps. Use a weight that you can atleast pump out 4 reps with but no more then 8 per set. Go untill positive failure meaning don't keep going unless you can properly complete the rep with correct form but don't quite if you can do anymore unless your at 8 reps. If you can still pump on or two out then up the weight slightly.

Go untill positive failure meaning don't keep going unless you can properly complete the rep with correct form This is very important- Shaneo, you mentioned the burn, and to tell the truth that has nothing to do with making progress. When Trick2 mentioned correct form, he means it- As soon as your arms start to move out of position, get shaky, if you feel your back trying to squirm underneath you, or your shoulders try to slide out of place- Put the weight down, you're done with that set. Proper form is proper form, don't deviate from it, and stop when you can't keep going with proper form. That's how a set's done right, and that's the best way to great gains with minimal risk of injury- Don't chase after that burning feeling, or the pump- Those things aren't indicative of gains at all.

cpl, are you sure you should stop when your arms start shaking? Whenever I bench heavy my arms shake, but everything else stays still. I've had no injuries either.

cpl, are you sure you should stop when your arms start shaking? Well, it's not proper form- If something's shaking, it's an indication that something's not able to handle the weight with proper form- If I can't perform a rep with a nice fluid motion, no shakes, no body contortion- I stop, set's over. And I still see gains.
