Need Help Here! - Sunday, February 20, 2005 1:42 PM
Hey. ok i was on here about a year back and tried some stuff but got lazy and lost it all.

Ok so this i where i need help. I'm not fat, i just have a bit of fat i should probably get rid of before thinking of training. I know there is no get fit quick schemes that work efficiently but i kind of need help. I find it hard to cut back on food. I mean i've always tried to cut back but its never really worked. I know i shouldnt stop eating but i should eat more of the food which are good for me. What i want to know is there any way i can be more strict with dieting and such. I know i just need to be more disciplined but thats where i need the help.

What i wanted to know, to draw it to a close, is are there any dieting or nutritional programs out there which could help me loose weight without me having to eat like 1 carrot a day?

Thanks

joe

hey Joe, welcome!

I, like you, started out with an extreme eating disorder..not the starving kind, and not the bingeing and purging kind either..I am talking about the kind where you eat when you're boerd, eat when you're happy, eat when you're tierd, eat when you're celebrating, eat when you're anxious..and assume it will have no effect on your physique..hell, I'm still young, right?

WRONG! It doesnt work that way..

And to think, I knew better. I was a friggin PT for crying out loud.. grad. in highest honors.

Thing is, I just NEVER got full, and I L-O-V-E food. When I was a teen, this wasn't an issue b/c I was growing, more active etc. I never saw any increase in my body, or on the scale.

But we soon all come to a point when our metabolism slows down. So you have to learn how to turn that b!t@# into a furnace..start by eating at least 6 meals a day. This will put your metabolism into constant action. I highly suggest posting in the nutrition forum, with your stats, and goals..by goals I mean, are you looking to bulk, or just define?

You dont have to "lose fat first before training". Thats a myth. Incorporate healthy eating habits with cardio and weight training into your daily repetoire and you will soon see the light of things to come.

I sympathize with your eating habits. Been there. To be honest diet will probably be your biggest obstacle. Its all willpower. Once you see gains, it will give you that much more motivation to eat right.

No need to starve yourself.

Welcome back, mrmop- I remember you from back in the day-
When it comes to sticking to a diet, listen to what 3days said- Smart woman.
It's all about changing your liftestyle, really- Once you start getting into the habit of eating five or six small meals a day, your body will definitely get used to it, and you won't have much of a choice- First of all, you'll feel much better, have much more energy throughout the day. Secondly, once your body's used to being fed all day long like that, if you miss one of those meals, you'll be absolutely starving- You'll really want to eat, trust me. Sure, it's hard getting yourself set up- You'll most likely have to pre-prepare your meals in advance for the next few days, plan out your eating habits a lot more than before, but the work is definitely worth it. You really don't need to starve yourself to lose weight.
Generally speaking, it's a good idea to find foods that you won't mind eating a lot of- Get yourself some nice sources of protein, complex carbs and good fats, then plan your meals to make sure you're getting enough of each. Make sure you post in the nutrition forum stating your goals, and also take a look at the posts stuck to the top of that forum- Especially the one about calculating your calorie expenditure. There's lots of great info in there, and you'll also learn how to find out exactly how much you should be eating to reach your goals.

Thanks. im only 15 so i know i have some growing still left in me but still. I am EXACTLY like that i just eat all the time it seems, i dont seem to PUT on too much weight but its going up slowly and i just want it to go down. Ok so i dont have to slim before training but theres one problem there. I suppose im different to most people on here. Most people are bodybuilders.. right? it would make sence. I'm really here to cut down my BF% and slim up a bit and maybe define some muscles but im not looking to have huge muscles. I'm sorry if i'm going to sound like a noob here but i dont see how eating 6 meals a day will help me loose weight?

Thanks Joe

eating 6 meals a day puts your metabolism into overdrive....

it does not have to be large meals, in fact, it shouldn't be. You can have a veggie shake, or a powerbar, a bagel, for a "snack meal".

By consistently feeding yourself this way, you can avoid overeating at the next scheduled mealtime. (ever notice how when you're starving, you can eat a main course as an appetizer, then another main course as a..main course, then dessert, then another dessert? I know..because I used to do that) By "snacking" in between meals, you are essentially curbing your appetite. When you are in a sense of starvation (from eating meals too far apart), your body stores excess calories as FAT as a defense mechanism. You combat this by kicking your metabolic rate up a notch by forcing it to work all day long, by eating 6 meals, spaced evenly throughout the day.

And dont ever starve yourself. Your body will waste muscle tissue, and valuable nutrients. Plus you'll feel like a$$.

You are not alone here. Many members on the board are not bodybuilders, but are trying to lose fat, or define.

And there is never a stupid question.

oh, and thanks Cpl

lol aww thanks. I think one of the main problems with me is that i dont neccessarily have tonnes of fat on my body its just that its in the wrong places lol. i mean my legs are pretty lean but my waist not so much. One little question lol. my ribs stick out. Not like \ but they got straight down but are out a bit. If i loose weight will my ribs go in or do i have to put muscle on to stop me looking like a skinnny freak?

If you lose weight, your ribs won't go in- But if you do add some muscle, not a lot, it won't look as bad. If you get on a nice weight program and eat to lose fat, you'll still get a nice physique.
