Hello,

Let me first start by throwing some information at you. I'm in the Army, currently deployed in Iraq. I'm 5'9", and right now about 179 lbs. I've never really been to the gym at all in my life. I don't know any exercises or routines or whatnot. I was always abit overweight growing up. Until I joined up in 2005, I was around 225 or so (at 5'8").

After coming in, I went through boot and whatnot, and came down into fighting shape at around 160-165. All we did, however, was pushups, situps, and run. Nothing at all gym-related. So even though I was leaned down, I still had flab and excess skin on my belly, and still the lovely little-bit saggy manboobs.

Upon coming to Iraq, I've done nothing at all for a workout, and am up to about 178-180 lbs right now. But lately, most of my buddies have been going to the gym all of the time, and I felt like I was missing out, so I decided to tag along for about the past week. Now, they seem to know what they're doing, despite not being subject matter experts on the issue, but.. we'll get to that.

The first day up there, we stayed for 2.5 hours. Started with about 2.5 miles of running, then did mostly legs but also threw in some decline situps with a weight and some decline benching. Kind of a wide variety of muscles to work out there, I thought, but oh well. Next day, we go in and do 2 miles of running, then dumbells and bench. As well as some pullups and decline situps with a weight. Again, not an expert, but I know working some of everything everyday isn't supposed to be healthy, right? I need to figure out a routine for me, I suppose.

However, the thing that concerns me the most:

I cannot bench at all. I thought, that with as many pushups as I have been able to knock out, I could get atleast 2 45's up, but no.. not even once. So we went down until I had 2 25's, and I could do about 7 unassisted, and the last 3 assisted. Then, they had me do 2 30's. About 4 unassisted, and the last 6 assisted. However, when I'm sitting here doing this, my spotter is telling me afterwards that he is not even touching it, and after doing 2 bench days, he said he thinks it's all in my head.

Like I said, I've never been to the gym before now in my life, and the idea of throwing up weights is abit.. intimidating, especially when there's a lot of other guys around me throwing up 4 plates without trouble, but damn... How do I work myself over this? If it is all in the head, what's the secret to getting passed it?

Other than that, my spotter wants me to start on a Gakic/Leukic combo. I'm not too sure about supplements. I just need to find a diet combo I think to start out with.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Your diet is the biggest thing seeing that your weight jumped so high after boot camp because you were not doing all the running training to burn the extra calories you eat. Just because you can do 100 pushups will say dont mean you bench more then someone who can do 50 pushups max. Like me for instints I can only do 50 max but I can bench 275 which is two 45s and one 25 pound plate on both sides of the bar. Because I weight train doing 3-10 reps which build muscle/strength while your doing 100s pushups building muscle endurance. You building muscle endurance allows you to move lighter weights for longer periods of time. Me building muscle strength allows me to move heavier weights for short amount of time. This is more less known as training yours muscle fibers but we dont need to go into all that im sure you understand from that. Your spotter telling you it is in your head is wrong its because you never really been in a gym as you said. Meaning weight lifting is new to you. Being new to it your weights your putting up will go up fast for a good amount of time and your muscle growth will come with it. Training all your body parts in one day isnt nessarly unhealthy depending on how you do it. You can do it with very low volume but its not a very good way at all to build strength/muscle. You can do something like that which is called a 3day split which is working out your whole body 3 days a week or you can do the most common thing which is working out each body part once a week.

Thanks for the quick reply! (It's so hard to get time to check internet here). Do you have any links to a really good beginner's workout that can be accomplished mostly solo?
