Need some help for my fiance

Hey guys, took a week off to go on vacation and ended up being engaged! The fiance promised me that he'd get a gym membership and start working out with me, but there's a problem. He has a bad leg (with maybe 1/2 the muscle his good leg has), and can't put too much weight on it without causing severe pain. That foot has no ankle joint, so he can't flex it. I'm thinking squats will be a no-go. Can anyone reccomend a good series of exercises that he'll be able to do safely? Also, if you have any beginners workout routines he could start on, that would be great. He's about 30-40lbs overweight and needs to cut while building the muscle he's lost due to two years of working a desk job and 4 years of art school.

water aerobics/swimming is great for those with bad joints /knees or legs. bicycling might be another option to help with the cut. as for the lifting, maybe he could some 1 leg presses on the machine for now. whatever he feels comfortable with since his leg is bad. sorry i can't offer more advice. i have no clue as to what he can and cannot do

He can't run, but cycling he can do. He really can't do anything that involves flexing one's foot, or putting a lot of weight on both legs. The machines will probably have to be where it's at for now, since he can alternate weights from one leg to the other.

agreed. just do what he can as far as weight lifting goes. the reason i suggested machine one legged is so that he can change the weight appropriately for what each leg can handle. cycling and swimming = he needs to do those. since he can't run. the most important thing that I think he will benefit from, is finding some type of routine, or layout that he can do.. and staying dedicated and just getting his body in rhythm with staying active. the more dedicated he is to doing exercise, the easier it will get. he can always be more aggressive with the length of time for things, and the amount of weight later on when he's adapted the training principles and stayed dedicated

Ja, it just sucks we can't do a lot of things together, and we don't have access to a big enough pool to swim laps.

did he have any physical therapy sessions for his leg? it sounds like he will need more of just physical excersise more than weight training. of course he could just bench and curl though like 80% of everybody else.
No the leg press is not the same as doing squats.

He did, but, he's gone through three surguries to repair the club foot he was born with. They made it walkable, but he can't walk too much, like at theme parks. I wanted to get him into weight training because I think it's important for all around fitness to do both weights and cardio.

Well I agree with Silverfox in regards to the water aerobics for all around fitness bc that will have resistance plus take off a lot of the weight put on his ankle/foot joint. As far as weight training just do machines for now like ext/curls you know. At least that will be a start. Oh and congrats on getting engaged!

Ok, start him off with basic movements and very little weight. Slowly increase as he gets better. Will take a good 6 months before any improvements. Just go light, get form down, and stick with it.

Thanks guys! I'll see if we can't get him to a pool somewhere, but our Golds Gym doesn't have one.
