Need some advice - Sunday, December 18, 2005 6:02 PM ( #1 )

Hey, there.

I started working out in the summer (3-4x a week). At around the end of October I broke my foot, so the doctor told me to stay away from any high intensity exercises for 3 weeks (something about blood flow) and to not run for 5-6 weeks. So I sort of gave the weight lifting thing a rest (I was surprised at how fast the benefits of running and weight lifting diminish!). In November I got sick for a month, so I couldn't exercise. A few days ago (thurs night or friday night) I decided I would start weight lifting again, seeing as I had got over the illness. I figured I would start light and do only a few sets. I did a few lifts then decided to end with a set of seated concentration curls for each arm. One with forearm and palm facing up, and another facing to the side. I only used 15 pounds on each arm because I remembered that I forgot to warm up and stretch before lifting, but figured that the other lifts I did warmed me up by then. I went to absolute muscle failure (love the burn) and then some (managed to squeeze in those extra reps, and then gave my right arm an extra short set, because my left arm is stronger than my right). Probably a bad idea. By the end of the night I couldn't straighten my arms out all the way without feeling strain, and last night I slept on my arm wrong, and today I couldn't move my right arm without it hurting (have to keep it at a 90 degree angle). I can move my arms at the shoulders and all that but I can't bend my right elbow very far without a lot of pain. My left arm isn't nearly as bad, just sore. But my right arm is unusually sore, more than your normal day after-the-workout sort of sore. It's surprising, having used only 15 pounds (I do low weight and high rep), because usually I would use a lot more than that. I doubt I tore any ligaments; I'm sure I would have heard some sort of pop or rip. I guess what I'm trying to ask is how one can "cure" the stiffness (what creams are good), if it's likely that I pulled my biceps (what do I look for?), and should I see a doctor (last resort, already been in like 3 times since oct). I would be very surprised if it was pulled, I mean after all I only used 15 lbs. It didn't hurt at first, and the next day it was only a little sore.. But today it hurts quite a bit to move the elbow. Maybe it's just normal, and being a beginner, never really felt that much soreness. Or maybe the soreness mixed with sleeping on it wrong intensified it.

Thanks for your time

PS: If it helps at all I'm 15
