Need information on this bench/about benches and squatting safety - Tuesday, April 29, 2008 12:30 PM ( #1 )
Hello all.

First of all I dont plan to ever bench or squat more than 110lb (deadlifts ok lol)

I have been using my piano bench for DB bench presses, but of course I now feel the need for a real bench that can incline and has a bar support to do barbell bench presses. Here in Europe we have a nice brand called Domyos that makes really good equipment at low prices BUT here is the main catch.

They have this bench here http://www.domyos.com/EN/bm-160-15862671/

That says max bar weight 110kg which is around 240lb, two times more the goal I want, but the price...its only $93. I search around for other brand's benches and they are soo much more expensive...that I must ask. Why? Is it because they allow more bar weight? or is it because this domyos bench is really bad in terms of quality?

Also as for squats. I easily clean 60lbs into squat position, would cleaning 110lb still be advisable? or should i invest on a rack as well? My budget is really tight and that bench looks good...at least in terms of price.

So, to sum up, my question is: would that bench be good for someone that doesnt want to go too high, but still wants to workout?
And cleaning into squat, advisable or not? Because I am going to follow this a routine by this guy (Arnel Ricafranca) and he has a killer body and doesnt squat more than 90lb(not counting bar) while working out (but could easily do more) he is only 5'4 though lol

Thank you all

Why are you so certain of this, it would not be hard for a normal trainee to eventually meet and exceed this weight.

You get what you pay for. Are you looking for Olympic benches? I've never heard of domyos. What part of Europe are you living. How much can you spend?

Are you cleaning into a front squat? It would be dangerous to do heavy squats without a rack.

It is just not in my goals to go much further.

I am in Portugal, but this brand sells to all Europe and is based in France I believe.

I clean and jerk, then slowly lower the weight to normal squat position, not front squat. What if I set the weights on two chairs and start from the end position into starting position? As i said before I do not intend to go very heavy with squats.
Thanks for your reply!

So why even bother? Bodyweight exercises provide more resistance than that.

The weight on the bar is not what defines safety. Proper form, with gradual increase in the weight, spotters, power rack and common sense are the things that provide safety. Limiting yourself with the weight you put on the bar is limiting what you can achieve.

If you don't have spotters that is also fine. Just don't push yourself to failure all the time, and get a power rack if possible.

Yeh, your bar is to low.

I work out at home and I am a girl, I don't have a spotter. I can safely bench with 45Lb dumbbells, I have front squatted 117 lbs. (maybe more can't quite remember, for the past 8 weeks or so I haven't squatted, tonight they come back!), and relatively speaking I am not all that strong for a girl who lifts (especially for as long as I have).

If you can get a squat rack, you will be as safe as possible that way other than that...

Thank you all for the advice. Yes i've always been conscious enough to never go to failure on squats, and I progress very gradually to make sure I handle the weight.

One more thing I would sugest front squatting instead of the traditional sqaut as you increase in weight, the lowering the bar behind the head, is a dodgey movement.  at excessive weights you could damage your shoulders.

read this thread, ignore the childishness, but there is good info in it, take from it what you choose.  http://www.discussbodybuilding.com/m_323162/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#323162
