Need help getting lean and cut - Saturday, October 04, 2008 10:00 AM ( #1 )
HI all. Well, I'm 5.9 and weight about 170 lbs. I'm trying to be more lean and cut, so I need help. I've been cutting down on the carbs. Is it a good thing to have low carb and more proteins a day and still gain muscles and not lose them?
If you have low carb (less energy), your body will start using the proteins from the muscles or does it use the bodyfat?

Morning: White eggs and 2 toasted white bread

Lunch: 2 chicken breasts and corn

Afternoon: Oatmeal and white eggs

After workout: Salmon and vegetables

Before bed: 40 grams weigh protein shake.

One question I really want to ask is:
What does your body do when you don't have enough calories after a workout to fix muscles?

Does it use the stored fat?

Your meals look good to me, although I am wondering why do you take your protein shake before you go to bed? most people I know take it first thing in the morning.

For your question, if you don't have enough calories for your muscles to recover you will enter into something called a "catabolic state" in which your muscles begin to feed on themselves.
Basically what this means is that your weight will plunge down but your body fat percentage will stay the same.

Where this falls down is when people are eating diets which are lower in calories for any reason, conscious or not. People who are ill or losing weight, for example, do not need less protein just because they are eating fewer calories.
The perfect amount of protein is highly debated today. Too much protein can cause as many health problems as too little protein. High protein diets are not the same thing as low carb diets, although people following Atkins, Zone, South Beach and other diet plans do tend to consume more protein. Eating a balanced amount of nutrients is the best way to maintain health and stamina. A good rule of thumb to follow for protein amounts is to keep the size of our protein in a serving to the dimension and thickness of one's palm of the hand

Pretty soon its going to look like I'm just following Bulking around saying "That^" but as it turns out he just finds all of the... um... wrong, things and then corrects them. So instead of saying "Thant^" I will simply say, that I would also like to hear the answer to the question that bulking has posed.

That is pretty common advice given to someone wanting to loose weight but probably not right if you are wanting to gain muscle or mass.
