Need a second opinion on this idea - Wednesday, October 08, 2008 7:06 AM ( #1 )
OK so getting tired of my same old bench routine in the gym, i came up with this as a need for change.
This is first exercise in my chest day, and not the whole workout

i start out, warming up with 225 for a few reps, just to get loose then i go

315x2-3
295x3-4
275x5-6
255x6-7
235x8-10
225x10, can usually get close to or at 20 reps with this weight but after this sequence im beat
i usually rest for about a min maybe min and a half b/w sets
also i try to either go up about 5 pounds in weight the next workout or get another rep. i thought of this as a way to kind of mix it up b/w gaining strength and size.
please feel free to add suggestions for changes. also please suggest some other workouts i could do after this to supplement my chest  routine, mines gettin kinda stale lol

so what are your goals?  depending on what they are and if that's not you're entire chest routine then it seems that it might be a slight overkill... How long have you been training and how many times weekly do you train your pecs?  Regarding your goals... what made you decide to drop weight and increase reps?
There is never enough time to do everything, but there is always enough time to do the most important thing

why are you declining in the weight lifted?   increase the weight.

and also.. why are you needing to do 40 reps for your chest?  not exactly necessary to grow IMO.. but somewhat depends on how often you lift specifically for your chest

5x5 is a vvvvvvvvvery good idea.  you really only need to do flatbench.   and maybe some dips.  all that other junk isn't necessary... PROVIDED you do the 5x5 routine at least twice a week.  3 times would be better.

working your chest once a week isn't the best idea.  for 6 days you rest.. and by the time 48 hours comes around most people's bodies are healed and ready for more.  which leaves 4 days where you sit... and aren't forcing the muscle to adapt and grow in order to do more heavy work.
