Need Help Gaining Healthy Weight - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 5:10 PM ( #1 )
Hey all I'm new here currently 19 years so almost not sure if I should be posting in the Teen section. Currently I'm 5'10, 130 lbs... all through out high school I was overly skinny, and I really want to gain a healthy amount of weight, while maintaining a low Body Fat%. I have really skinny arms about 11" and I really want to get more noticeably bigger, defined arms, shoulders, chest, upper body...

I know in order to do this I can't just eat anything, and everything.. or else all I would be doing is adding excess Body Fat, and that would defeat my goal of looking ripped. I'm trying to really clean up my diet.. taking in more Protein, cutting out a lot of the processed, refine sugars... and I've been drinking exclusively Water. The problem is I'm not a natural "Eater" I fill up on meals easily, and my stomach can't handle eating very much... don't know how to help that.

As far as exercise routines go can anyone make any recommendations? I would really like to find a Gym to get into but there aren't any in my immediate area... and it makes things difficult. I'm currently have some limited free weight Dumbells, and am doing mostly Body weight exercises.. a lot of Pull-ups, Push-Ups, Dips.. I'm making sure to rest in between work out days. Should I  be adding Cardio to the regular work out mix? If so how many times per week? and for how long.

this is a current pic to give an idea of Body type.. sorry for the quality. Around what Body Fat% would I be at?

thanks in advance for any suggestions, advice.

Rely on healthy foods- brown rice, pasta, veggies, fruits, chicken, fish, wheat bread, eggs, whey protein, casein (cottage cheese), oatmeal.

Make a diet from those foods and eat in a surplus and you'll do fine.

As far as routines go - www.startingstrength.net , great program for beginners. Just replace power cleans with barbell rows to balance the horizontal push (bench presses).

As long as you burn what you eat when you work out, it will turn into pure muscle gain. But make sure that with your metabolism you eat until you cant eat anymore... then keep eating!

But to make sure that you maintain a low body fat% while gaining muscle, you need to force your body to use that fuel to supply your muscles. But make sure you stay away from simple carbs, most saturated fats, and sugar.

but MVP , you seriously think the power cleans need to be replaced with the rows?!!

i do understand what you are talking abt balancing the workouts. but 3 sets of BB rows can be included at the end of the workout just to make sure everything balances out..

im just surprised coz rippetoe's logic and routine has helped me a lot and i find it wierd that anyone would change it.
