RE: NBS Journal - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 8:00 PM
i would drop back 10 lbs, theres time to work up more. ive made mistakes of increasing too soon too mcuh as well. if i keep good form but fail on the last rep or something, ill try it again next workout, if i fail again then mix things up. but if its form, i would just do the less weight and work up. the last thing you want is to have a form issue again next time.

deadlifts after squats can do that to you it seems. how are you doing your negatives? i used to be sloppy on negative on deads but i now do them real slow and ive made some good strength increases with that. its hell to tho. do you deload each rep? that helps focus with form too if you dont.

Yeah I was beginning to think dropping back would be the better idea.  My negatives take just as much time as the concentric part of the lift, which is pretty slow haha.  I def don't slam the weight back down.  And I always deload, yes.

I'm not sure how long I'm gonna stick with this routine, but when I change, I'm not gonna have any days with squat and dead on the same day.  The reason this isn't so bad is because there's only one working set of deads.

ive been basically doing the same thing, 3 sets squats then 1 dead...the good thing abut it is that when you separate the two, your deadlift will be significantly higher than when behind squats.  good luck

Thanks guys.

I'm happy that I'm putting the mass back on, I just hope I don't get too fat.  I won't be able to fit in any of the work clothes i just bought a month ago

well.. u better be prepared to buy new clothes then.  that's the price we pay for bulking.  everything gets bigger.. YES, even the waistline.    it's well worth it though.

RE: NBS Journal - Thursday, June 12, 2008 4:00 PM
Parallel Squat
1X5X95
1X5X135
1X3X175
3X5X185

Military press
1X5Xbar
1X5X75
3X5X95
Left shoulder didn't strain at all during lift.  But it was pretty sore afterwards. My right kinda was too tho

Hang clean
1X5Xbar
1X3X85
4X3X105
Yeah, I counted the 85 as a set w/e.

Pullups
2X4XBW
Again had to rest (about 5 seconds) before final rep second set

I'm still not catching the bar like I should on the cleans.  My elbows aren't sticking out, but I moreso end up in the military press position by the end.  I think it is cause the weight is so low, and that I'll get it right once the weight gets so heavy that I have to hold it right to avoid dropping it.

Another huge pump for my traps by the time I left the gym.

My shoulders are all kinds of sore by this point (~30 min after workout).  I'm really beginning to think it is just because they are weaker than the rest of my body and that the soreness will go away at some point once they catch up.

Either that or I'll find out the hard way that that's not the case...

Parallel Squat
1X5X95
1X5X135
1X3X175
3X5X195
Starting to get tougher...

Flat Bench
1X5Xbar
1X5X95
1X3X135
3X5X150
Spotter had to help on final rep/final set

Deadlift
1X5X135
1X3X185
1X5X215
Good idea to drop back in weight.  I have a feeling 225 will be no problem next workout.

I looked down after my final deadlift and my left shin was covered in blood.  I need to toughen up my skin a little bit.

Im gonna leave out the dips for now because of my shoulder.

On the subject of my shoulder, it was kind of bugging me the past two days, but not so much today.  I'm becoming increasingly worried about it.

i have to watch my shoulders too, i rolled (for lack of better word, maybe a bit dislocated but not to the point where it stays dislocated) my left shoulder hitting in baseball and its prone to sort of rolling if im not careful...its frightening, it literally drops dead haha, happened once with db presses and my left shoulder just like caved and cracked, its scared me like crazy.  so i stick to bb now and gave it plenty of rest. moral, be cautious with shoulders.

i dont know what to tell you about your situation, i never get sore in my shoulders, i just know one might pop if i push too hard haha. hence, also probably why my shoulders lag a bit in strength.

for me, i could do dips and they didnt bother my shoulder at all, actually nothing but oh presses did then. pullovers were rough actually as well, which sux cause i like them a lot.

id be careful benching heavy too w shoulder issues, hopefully thatll clear up, shoulders are a ****at times no doubt

I've got a history to my problem.  Here's the thread about it:

http://www.discussbodybuilding.com/m_368733/mpage_1/tm.htm#368733

I still don't really know what the problem is, but at this point, it still isn't really painful, just annoying.  I'm gonna keep riding it out and see what happens

Parallel Squat
1X5X95
1X5X135
1X3X165
1X2X185
3X5X200
As I continue to climb the ladder...

Military Press
1X5Xbar
1X5X75
3X5X95
No increase in weight.  Monitoring my shoulder.  Subsequently not as much pain today.

Pendlay Rows
1X3X95
3X5X115

Pullups
1X4XBW
1X3.5XBW
The last rep wasn't full range of motion so I only count it as a half rep.

My shoulder doesn't feel as bad today.  There was noticable pain there for the few days following the last military presses, so I decided not to increase the weight this time.

I switched to Pendlay rows because I feel it will be better for my shoulder.  Not because they hurt from cleans (although they do slightly), but also because I need to add more rowing to help it heal (according to a write-up from rippedchick).

Although my pullups haven't really changed, I guess I'm still getting stronger because I was 10 lbs lighter when I started this routine

Weighed 194.8 lb this morning...  Think I might be puttin on more fat than I wanted.

Parallel Squat
1X5X95
1X5X135
1X3X175
1X2X195
3X5X205

Flat Bench
1X5Xbar
1X5X95
1X3X135
3X5X150

Deadlift
1X5X135
1X4X195
1X5X225
Booyah!

Had a spotter for final bench set.  I think when I told him I was doing 5, he automatically assumed I was going to failure, so right when I was coming up on the 4th rep he immediately put his hands under the bar and took a slight amount of the resistance away for the final 2 reps.  It was close, but I'm pretty sure I would have gotten it on my own.  I can't be mad at him tho, he didn't volunteer to spot.

My back was noticably more sore than normal after deads.  My form felt spot on tho, as I really felt my glutes/hams working on the final set.  It's just as I left, I felt most of the soreness in my lower back.  I'm not sure what to think.  Regardless I'm happy I got the weight up with no trouble.

And most importantly, my shoulder has felt GREAT these past couple days!  It's really boosting my spirits, and I hope with a slow progression for presses that the problem will fix itself.

Time for band practice...

Parallel Squat
1X5X95
1X5X135
1X3X175
1X2X195
3X5X210
Getting pretty tough

Military Press
1X5Xbar
1X5X75
3X5X100
Shoulder has been doing alright lately.

Pendlay Rows
1X5Xbar
1X5X95
1X5X120
2X5X115
Form was a little shaky, hence why I dropped back.  Form at 115 felt good.

Pullups
2X4XBW
Still not quite the entire ROM, but it is getting easier now that I'm not gaining weight like crazy.

Drank 7 beers last night, so I wasn't at top performance today.  I was yawning constantly between sets.  I think the extra rowing is really helping my shoulder, so I will stick to the Pendlays and hold off on the power cleans for a while.

Parallel Squat
1X5X95
1X5X135
1X3X175
1X2X195
3X5X215

Flat Bench
1X5Xbar
1X5X95
1X3X135
3X5X155
I was surprised that I got all reps with no assistance.

Deadlift
1X5X135
1X4X195
1X5X235
Piece o' cake

I got a nice confidence boost when this older guy who was all around massive, obviously had been lifting for years, walked up during my 2nd working squat set and was like, "Man, that's some damn good form... goin' PAST parallel," then walked away.  Needless to say, although it was distracting, it sure as hell got me energized for the last couple reps and the next set.

My shoulder has had absolutely no pain for at least a week.  My bench was strong today, too, so those are two +'s.

I had no trouble deadlifting that weight.  I felt really strong and probably could have made a 20 lb jump instead of 10.  I will continue with the 10's tho.  No need to jump the gun.
