My Best Advice for the Beginning Lifter

There’s nothing more annoying then starting out your fitness quest and working hardcore for two weeks, maybe more and then not seeing the results you want. To your eyes, that is failure. Many people join gyms in January, only to quit in February and the ones who hang on, might make it until March.

My best advice to any beginner is pretty simple really. Education.

That’s right. Education.

Reading as much as you can on the various topics to gain a general understanding of how it affects you. One thing that so many beginners complain about is there’s so much information out there, what’s the right one? The answer is, there is no right one but many different choices you can make in order to reach your goals.

The best advice I can give to anybody who is starting this journey is to understand the basics of nutrition. Understand that there are many training programs out there and there’s no golden program that will work for everybody, every time. Experiment with training until you find something you like, that works with your routine. Understand that progress and changing your body takes time. At least 3 solid months of a good diet and exercise before you will really begin to notice the changes. That shortcuts are possible but they come with risks. Taking pills to get lean while watching T.V. is not the answer.

When I started out at 16, I tried supplements first, I looked in bodybuilding books and followed routines of the pros. I knew nothing about nutrition other then fruits and vegetables were good and fat was bad. I had no idea what my goal was, I just wanted to be bigger.

What did I do wrong? Why did it take me 16 years to get where I am today?

I didn’t have anybody giving me good beginning advice.

Nobody said, the best advice I can give you is to learn about three things in this game.

Nutrition.
Training.
Supplements.

Once you understand the very basics of nutrition, you’ll be able to pick out foods that help you reach your goals. Once you understand there’s many training programs out there and by doing many of them and incorporating variety into your routine, you will do much better then somebody who just picks a program and that’s it for years. And once you understand the role of supplements, you’ll be able to use them to your advantage rather then just buying products and getting frustrated they don’t work for you.

The best advice I can give any beginner today is to take the time to learn about fitness. Read a few books, have a few good websites handy (like how to do an exercise properly) and you’ll be so far ahead of the game.
