If you mean whilst you are doing them then it depends how bad the pain is, if its like a painful stretch pain then its perfectly normal, if its an excruciating facecringing pain then see doctor.

If you mean afterwards they hurt, then it's normal.

When you say you were wondering if they should be sore anywhere else, soreness doesn't mean you had a good workout or a bad workout so you can't tell by that. Oh and what virt said.
Goals by end of 2009:

Squat Clean 185

I think I recall a lot of muscle soreness when I first started pushups, do note, I think I was unable to get even one pushup back then. Soreness is going to be normal, get used to it, if you want pig pecs you need to do flat benching, and deadlifting, eat enough calories and protein to fuel it.
Diet is key, Diet is key, what you eat is what you be, Diet is key. Get all your calories from whole foods (un-modified foods), except your post workout shake.

If you don't have a bench then you can floor press by raising the bar up about 1.5 ft and do it that way.

---
Even when you start benching, the pushups are beneficial to you and there are plenty of variations to keep you busy. Standard pushups aren't going to pack on a lot of muscle as far as I know. I'm not sure about the more advanced versions, they demand a lot of strength though, like the planc pushup, hand stand pushup, etc.

There are big threads around here packed with everything you need to know, forget where they are.. ah here is one of them.

I think you get sore from using a muscle really hard or from an angle you don't/haven't really used it from before.

Deadlifting to help build strong pecs? I know different types of pushups can be hard but I would really just forget about pushups and start lifting.

push ups are really beneficial imo.  Maybe its just how my body responds but i increase bench strength when ever i do tons of push ups from all different hand locations.  I wouldnt replace doing bench press for them but there is no need to drop them.

Yeah actually benching with dumbbells can be benificial. If thats what you've got to start with rock it.

Look around on the site and you'll get a pretty good idea of how to get big man.

Oh ps. the soreness is 100% normal. I think (I could be all the way wrong) that that soreness is the tendons. They've got to get stronger and they will. eventually that part of your chest wont get sore at all.

hey wilson
if you are just starting the bodybuilding game i would like to offer some advice
1. its called bodybuilding not chest building, train just about all body parts will equal attention and intensity
2. PTMS (post training muscle soreness ) is your new shadow
3. its gonna take alot more than pushups
good luck
if that stuffed worked
it wouldn't be legal
take that supplement industry
