Can anyone tell me what muscles are used in bench, and also what muscle it is that helps you get it from 3-4in off your chest to all the way up?

The main muscles used in bench press are the pecs, shoulders and triceps- Increase your strength in all those areas, and your bench press weight will go up. The lower half of the movement involves more chest, while the upper portion involves the triceps a little more.

pectoralis major and minor, anterior deltoids, and triceps
if you have wider than shoulder grip its an outer pec thing, close grip is inner chest and tris more
also remember to flare your lats and they will help in the pressing
good lats and back help bench also
