You'll keep the muscle for a very short time

The way you build muscle is by lifting heavy weights and feeding your body to build the muscle, Your body has to have a reason to put on some muscle, or to keep it. If you stop working out, your body will no longer have a need for that muscle. So it will get smaller

Strength gains disappear way before mass gains too.

It's like when you finish school and you don't have to do, say, maths anymore. For a little while, maybe even a year or two (depending on your memory), you will remember some it. But eventually you will forget all but what you need to use in your every-day life.

It's that same thing with muscles basically. When your body thinks it doesn't need that muscle using all its extra energy and slowing it down it will eventually use it for something else, energy for example. Depending on your genes you will keep anywhere from 70%(very rare) to 0-10%, with most people probably keeping about 10-15% of there mass gains until quite a few years down the track.

Bottom line, if you want to keep your muscle then keep working out. Remember that if you eat the same way as you did when working out your body will store the cals(in fat, not your biggest concern tho) instead of build muscle with them.

Muscle does not turn to fat, fat just covers the muscle, so if anyone says "All those muscles will hang off you as flab" or something along those lines, they are completely wrong, end of story.

Moral of the story: Don't stop lifting.

You'd probably become a tub of crap. I know I did and have to start working out again. I worked out very heavy during the 70's and 80's . I injured my shoulder and needed surgery which kept me from lifting almost 2 years. I stopped and it didn't take long to have 19" arms 54'' chest and a 31' waist to puny arms 16", chest down to 48 " and a GUT 38" I originally weighed 205 and ballooned to 240 of complete sludge. To answer you you lose everything. BUT once you start working out again the body responds quickly due to the muscle having been developed and stimulated before. I was lucky to have a relative who was a former national bodybuilding champ help me. If what I am saying is incorrect please indulge me with what is now correct. I am now going to age myself here. But look at pictures of Casey Viator after he lost his finger, He still had some size but he looked terrible. But like I stated he started to workout again and made tremendous gains quickly and at that "time" he looked huge.
