If you haven't heard about Miracle Fruit, you may want to read up on it to get a primer. The berry is sweet, and contains an active glycoprotein molecule, with some trailing carbohydrate chains, called miraculin. When the fleshy part of the fruit is eaten, this molecule binds to the tongue's taste buds, causing bitter and sour foods (such as lemons and limes) consumed later to taste sweet. This effect lasts between thirty minutes and two hours. It is not a sweetener, as its effects depend on what is eaten afterwards, but has been used to sweeten bitter medicines. In other words, if you have a sweet tooth, but don't want to bust your diet with sugar, and don't like or don't trust artificial sweeteners, you can satisfy it with miracle fruit. Some friends and I decided to give it a try, to see if it really works as claimed. We ordered some freeze-dried miracle fruit powder. You can also get berries (at about two bucks a pop), but they are very perishable and harder to get. You can also grow them yourself. They're tropical, so you can only grow them outside if you live in Southern Florida, but they supposedly grow fine indoors. The effect is quite remarkable, and the powdered berries work great. We used about 1-2 grams of the powder, which corresponds to about 1-2 berries. The powder itself was a kinda tangy generic berry flavor; nothing remarkable. We lined up all the foods we could think of to try - it only affects sour flavors, so many things didn't really taste much different. The biggest winners were the sour fruits. Lemons tasted like sweet lemonade. Limes were incredible. They were just electric with flavor. They were still sour, but pleasantly so. And they were deliciously sweet. Putting lime or lemon juice on anything made it taste sweet. Rhubarb was really good, but we had some pretty dried-up bland rhubarb, so it could have been better. Raspberries tasted like they were just covered in sugar. Grapefruit juice was very good, and I don't really like grapefruit. Orange juice was ruined by the effect. It was just way, way too sweet. Revoltingly, cloyingly, disgustingly sweet. We had some unsweetened 100% cranberry juice. It's not like the regular cranberry juice ****tail you usually get. It's 100% cranberry juice, and it's not something you can normally drink by itself. But with the miracle fruit it was delicious. It's very acidic though, so don't go drinking tons of it unless you want your stomach to give you fits. Cheese mostly tasted bland. We had some very sharp aged cheddar cheese and it just tasted really mild. Same with bleu cheese. It was easier to taste some of the more subtle flavors in the bleu cheese, like the apple aftertaste, but mostly it was just mild. Cream cheese and goat cheese were actually really good; they tasted almost like cheesecake. Sour cream tasted almost like whipped cream, it was very sweet. Yogurt was also incredibly sweet. It was just plain, non-fat yogurt, but it tasted just as sweet as the sweetened fruity kind. The effect on milk was strange. It was almost like it had no characteristics at all. It didn't taste bad, it just was like nothing. It didn't even seem like water, it was like it was just not there. It didn't even seem cold or anything. It wasn't even unpleasant. Beer was different, sweeter but not in a malty beer way. Lagers tasted more like ales. Tequila and other alcoholic beverages we tried didn't taste much different. Vinegar tasted sweet. Seriously. It wasn't like "awesome", but it was very sweet. It still kinda burned, and it smelled like vinegar, but it was completely palatable. You'll get sick if you drink a whole glass of vinegar, but it's definitely worth trying. Things like bread or meat had very little effect. Some tasted a little bland. Cheesey poofs tasted bland. Pop was revolting. We had some sour gummi candies that were sweeter - one of the flavors tasted like chapstick (in a good way). We had some very rich chocolate that mostly just tasted like less expensive chocolate. Peanut butter didn't change much, but tasted a little like peanut butter cookies. The most surprising thing is that mostly, things didn't taste weird. They were all recognizable, but they were different. And there was no artificial sweetener type aftertaste. Some things tasted like they had a lot of sugar, but didn't have the sticky sensation sweet things have. Cranberry juice, for instance, was still dry and astringent even though it was sweet. The effect lasted well over an hour before it diminished significantly. Even with everything we were eating and drinking, and washing it down with water, the effect didn't seem to go away. I highly recommend giving it a try sometime. I'm gonna see if I can get a hold of one of the plants myself.

Sounds awesome. Where'd you get the powder from? I am very keen on trying some in the near future.

...Is it just me or did this post just not sound like jheft? Im a little dubious of this thread...its a joke or something lol.... I mean seriously, have you ever seen jheft MAKE a thread where he typed out 14 paragraphs just to "advertise" something Usually a half sarcastic 1 paragraph post would be all he does... Maybe im looking too far into this, it just seemed out of character lol.

Yes, it's me, but I was typing it late at night, so it's a bit sloppy. It's long because I wanted to list all the different things we tried, though in retrospect I missed a few. It was my buddy who bought the powder, I'll have to ask him where he got it from.
