Middle to Upper Back Injury Prevention - Saturday, June 17, 2006 9:17 AM
Ok, well to start off, last year our conditioning/weightroom coach was a d*** for football, and towards the end of the season he was starting to make us do higher clean weights than we ever had before... basically there would be maybe 2 days a week dedicated to ONLY cleans.  We would start out at 135, increase to 155, then 185.  When we did this we had 6 bars and we would have a line of 3-4 people in each line.  Now you would go up on his call and everything and we normally did 5 reps per set.  If you couldnt get it up basically he would talk s*** to you until you could and everyone who got it up had to wait for you, so there was ALOT of pressure to get the weight up.  Now i could do all the weight but i think it was the 185 that i had to use my back for and i ended up, after one day of doing it having serious pain in my upper/middle back.  Now i had to take 1 1/2 weeks off football and iced it everyday, got shock theropy stuff from our trainer, and did several stretches.

It seems to be fine since then, however recently, when doing squats on my own (only like 285), afterwards i felt fine, but the next morning i woke up with pain in my back again, it doesnt hurt all the time, but certain positions really hurt.  Now my back feels better (its been 2 weeks since then) and i was wondering, what should i do to prevent this from coming back?  Should i do more stretching before i work out (i really barely do any, besides legs which is not a lot)?

First Reset, go to see a doctor and get you back looked at and examined. From the story you gave us, it doesnt sound like a SERIOUS injury but always nice to hear that from a doc. Then start small, non-vigourous stretching exercises while continuing ice/heat therapy 1-2 times a day.

Another thing thats wonderful for these kind of muscular/connective tissue injuries is Massage. Either go to a proper maseur OR get your significant other or family member or friend to massage your back a few times a week for a few weeks. You should find some improvement.

But back injuries should never be taken lightly. like i said, its probably not serious, but always better safe than sorry. So before you do anything else, go get the green light from a medical professional.
