Members who built their home gym... - Friday, July 25, 2008 8:52 AM ( #1 )
I'm was going to remodel on of my bedrooms as an office but have decided to turn it into a workout area.

My question is for the people that have done this what type of flooring is best?  Is carpet ok flooring for a rack or a bench setup?  I would have figured since there's a pad underneath the carpet that it might be a little wobbly.  I was thinking about putting down hardwood as well.  Either way I'll have to put something down because I've ripped up the old carpet already.  So any suggestions or Pro/Cons would be great.

horse stall mats

3/4" rubber mats. They're durable and perfect flooring for a home gym. You definitely don't want equipment sitting on carpet. You can find them at feed stores. They're heavy as hell though and hard to cut up so get a buddy to help you install them.

Garage would have been ideal but I don't have one of those...  Next house will though!

Sam's Club has packages of these 2' x 2' foam rubber mats, I think one package equals 16' squared and is around $20.  I set my garage up as my home gym and laid them down the entire floor.  I highly recommend them.

Half of my garage houses my equipment, the other half is open mat space I use for my grappling and martial arts training.

For their thickness (1/2"), the mats I mentioned are sturdy and very impact-absorbent.  As I've been throw very hard many times without injury.  But, I do know how to take a fall, so that might have something to do with it.

I use stall mats too, they are $35 each here.  I need to go get a couple more still.

hi there. i had the same dilemma when i was making my mini gym at home.guess what? i went to seek professional consult with regards to the flooring as well as the equipment that id be needing. in this case, you won't be spending on what's not needed and your safety is guaranteed. nothing beats a good advise from someone who knows....

I realise this is old, but I built my garage out to a gym, I used laminate flooring over the concrete, and an area rug for under my bench and Smith.  For freeweight stations I have anti-fatigue matting over the flooring.  I purchased these from Costco for 15 buck for a 3x3 mat that is interlockable.
