Members who built their home gym...
-
Friday, July 25, 2008 8:52 AM
I'm was going to remodel on of my bedrooms as an office but have decided to turn it into a workout area. My question is for the people that have done this what type of flooring is best? Is carpet ok flooring for a rack or a bench setup? I would have figured since there's a pad underneath the carpet that it might be a little wobbly. I was thinking about putting down hardwood as well. Either way I'll have to put something down because I've ripped up the old carpet already. So any suggestions or Pro/Cons would be great.

horse stall mats 3/4" rubber mats. They're durable and perfect flooring for a home gym. You definitely don't want equipment sitting on carpet. You can find them at feed stores. They're heavy as hell though and hard to cut up so get a buddy to help you install them.

Sam's Club has packages of these 2' x 2' foam rubber mats, I think one package equals 16' squared and is around $20. I set my garage up as my home gym and laid them down the entire floor. I highly recommend them. Half of my garage houses my equipment, the other half is open mat space I use for my grappling and martial arts training. For their thickness (1/2"), the mats I mentioned are sturdy and very impact-absorbent. As I've been throw very hard many times without injury. But, I do know how to take a fall, so that might have something to do with it.

I use stall mats too, they are $35 each here. I need to go get a couple more still.
