Meal replacments and weight loss - Monday, February 07, 2005 5:36 PM
Hey I am new to the fourm and looking for advice. Im 29 and just starting to take up lifting. Im am about 5 9 and weigh 230 at about 30% body fat. I realize I have a lot of weight to loose before I even start to have any muscle bulk. My question is are portein meal replacments the right way to go along with cardio or just a better diet and wait on the supplements. If I do take the supplements how much and how often, and should they replace meals or go between.

Thanks

Erik

well i don't think that protein shakes should be thought of as "meal replacements" b/c they're usually added to a diet to get in more protein, especially when bulking.

and you don't have to lose "a lot" of weight before you start bulking. but i guess i'm not exactly sure what your goals are. why don't you let us know what you're looking to acomplish and post your current training in the "critique my training" forum and i'm sure you'll get plenty of help.

and Welcome to DB!

I think that protein shakes, as long as you get the right kind that has not only protein, but some fat and carbs and vitamins, are a great meal replacement. I drink 5 while at work (10 scoops, 2 scoops per drink) while at work while I'm cutting.

It is way cheaper (for me) than going out every so often to buy food from a local store, it is delicious and I never have blood sugar highs or lows which can adversely affect my work.

Good luck!

Better diet. You can use protein shakes, but try to make most of your meals consist of good healthy solid foods. No supplement out there beats natural healthy food- Besides the nutritional info, food takes longer to digest than shakes. Digestion, believe it or not, burns calories. If you're eating five or six small healthy meals a day, your body will be burning calories all day- And since the food is healthy, there's a lot less waste product that gets turned to fat- I know some people who've gone with mostly shakes, and even according to them, it's just not the same.

thats good info to hear.............honestly i'm pretty busy so sometimes eating a very healthy meal isn't really in the cards but mixing a shake is always something easy..........its hard to cook at the office but i always can find a glass and spoon :)

how bad is it to actually use protein as a meal replacement?
