Maximum period of time for bulking

Question: is there a limit to the number of weeks one should spend on bulking? i've been spending close to 6 months bulking now, but i'm still about 40 pounds away from my ultimate goal, should i keep bulking all the way till i reach my goal, or is it better to take it in increments? eg bulk, cut, bulk, cut etc i'm interested all of a sudden because while bulking i had accumulated a layer of Fats around my waist, not that i find them unsightly or anything (because i'm finally fat for once in my life lol) , but i just want to know if i'm doing anything wrong

You've been bulking for 6 months and are 40 lbs away from your goal? Sounds like you need to set some more attainable short term goals and leave that as a long term. You can bulk as long as you please as long as you're not putting on too much bad weight (fat). Bulk untill you feel you've reached a set weight then cut down. Some people can bulk and not put on any fat so if you're one of those people just keep bulking forever lol. Don't take the term "bulking" the wrong way. It's not an excuse to just eat however you want since your goal is weight gain. You want lean gains.

I started out being skinny and have been bulking for a year in a half to two years now with minimal fat gain. I would have to second what he said. As long as you are not putting on overly high amounts of fat I would keep bulking until you get to your goal. However in some cases, like right now when it is about to get into the warm "beach season" up in MN, I switch my routine up a little bit and add a little cardio. This promotes some fat loss so that I can cut myself up a little bit for the beach. It's all really up to you. The way I do it might take a little longer, but I feel it is worth it because I not only keep myself looking good in the Summer, but I stay healthy.
