Massive Eating - Monday, April 13, 2009 5:46 PM ( #1 )
Okay, so Dr. John M. Berardi wrote up the Massive Eating program. Anybody around here give it a try? It seems very legit.. I was considering it for my fall/winter bulk.

According to the write up I need..

30/40/30 Macro

  • 4,600 Calories
  • 345g Carbs
  • 460g Protein
  • 153g Fat

I have an endo body type, and I am in the middle on carb sensitivity so that's why I chose 30/40/30. I will get that in 6 to 8 meals. Friday and Saturday nights will be the two cheat dinners; but I will be reasonable with what I eat.

Meal #1: Carb + Protein
Meal #2: Fat + Protein
Meal #3: Fat + Protein
Pre W/O: Protein
Post W/O: Protein + Carb
PP W/O: Protein + Carb
Meal #7: Protein + Fat + Fibrous Veggies
Meal #8: Protein + Fat + Fibrous Veggies

To account training into this, I plan to train German Volume Training 5 days per week with low intensity walking factored in. On off days I will go for a long low intensity walk.

Carb sources:
Sweet Potatoes
Baked Potatoes
Brown Rice
Vegetables
Limited Fruit/Low GI Fruit
Cereals
Pasta (White)
Oats
CytoCarb/Cytogainer
Whole Wheat Bread
Milk

Protein Sources:
Chicken
Eggs
Turkey
Fish
Red Meat
General Dairy

Fat Sources:
Fish Oil
Mayonnaise
Olive Oil
Eggs
Cashews/Peanutbutter
Whole milk

Looking over this, that seems like an overkill on nutrients and possibly calories. Maybe I am just scared of getting fat? Realisticly, if I follow this for 6 months, I want to gain no more than 2% body fat and gain no less than 20-30 pounds. Yes, I will use PH's during this time frame, so the muscle gain does seem realistic, no?

Gain no less than 2% body fat eating 4500 calories for 6 months?

Doubtful. I also think you are going overkill on protein.

Yeah, I guess I was a little optimistic. How about 3 months of this and no more than 3% bf increase with a gain of 15 - 25 pounds..?

There is a certain amount of calories you will need in order to grow. This number is hard to hit exactly but you can find the range. By eating an excess of calories (more than you need to grow) you will just gain additional fat.  I would suggest trying to find this range if you are really concerned with gaining additional body fat.  what are your stats?

Uhm currently 172lb, 10% BF, 5'9" and my lifts are in my profile..

I know nutrient timing and the science and all that jazz, I just think 4600 is hella over kill. I was think 3500 to start out and measure my waist each Monday and go up or down in calories from that point.

I'm not really worried about getting some additional fat, it's just easier if it stays away, speaking from a former fat boy POV.

Okay, I redid a BMR formula without the Berardi style and I got almost exactly

3000 Calories Per week for +1lb/week
225g Carbs
300g Protein
100g Fat

6 Meals, approximately 500 calories each. Seems more reasonable, but how much of that 1 pound is going to actually be muscle?

research a bit more on the cashew please. coz cashew is supposed to contain some kinda bad cholestrol and regular consumption is bad for u. not sure why, but we dont include cashew much in our cooking in our culture. almonds will be a better substitute for nutwork dont u think?
Anbe Sivam. Period.

That sounds much better. Should be mostly muscle if you are only gaining 1lb a week and your are lifting a lot.

if your doing this really clean you can expect to gain .35-.5 lbs of muscle per week. I will try to find research to support this but it is what is supported by most realistic people. It is a good goal to shoot for 1 lbs per week because it will ensure that you are in a calorie surplus but don't expect it all to be muscle. It would be nieve to think that you could gain 52 lbs of muscle in one year. 26 is a stretch, you have to remain super dedicated to see results like that. Don't worry about adding a liittle fat. It is easier to take off since you will have more muscle to burn it off once you decide to cut.

I have his book "From Scrawny To Brawny", but personally I wouldn't take most of his advice about nutrition on board. He advocates a very high protein diet, as you've shown, but I personally think it's an overkill. His advice on carbs/proteins for pre, during and post is even worse, the amount he suggests is simply too much.

Realistically I don't think you need that much food. I think you should just stick to what you've been eating as usual, however split the portion sizes instead of 3(?) into 5-6 now, and increase your calories slightly, and then see how your weight gain looks every week, and adjust from there onwards.

PS. I highly discourage you taking PH's, the side affects aren't worth it and plus if you're new to training, why the hell you would start taking PH's when you haven't even got your training and nutrition in place. I just wanna knock some sense into you, and make you realise what you're doing! :)

Re:Massive Eating - Wednesday, April 22, 2009 7:56 AM ( #12 )
I have been training sicne my freshman year in highschool, but I have been religiously training for two years. (140lb at 15%bf or so to now)

I know how to cut but I hate it, and I know pretty well the aspects of nutrition. However, I always just dirty bulked, so I am kind of ignorant on the subject of getting bigger. I always get fatter before I get more muscular, but I have currently been eating about 3100-3600 calories in 6-8 meals with Max ot/west side training (See journal) and I sit at about 180lb and still 10% bodyfat and breaking PR's, so that's no longer a big prob. His massive eating 4000+ isn't a good idea, I see that now.

Don't slap me. Lol.
