Madcow 5x5 Friday Assistance - Saturday, July 04, 2009 8:09 PM ( #1 )
On Madcow 5x5 im supposed to do 3 sets of dips however i havent been doing them because it kills my shoulders and i get this really weird popping pain on the bottom in my wrists that seems to then go all the way up. This happens no matter how light or easy the dip would otherwise feel. Instead i've been doing skullcrushers but i was thinking of going to close grip bench for 3 sets as ive always liked those. However ive also been hearing a lot about close grip reverse bench pressing which i could do instead. Which one should i choose to do 3 sets of instead of the dips or should i superset one set of each of these or what?

Thanks!

Close grip bench presses are generally better, IMPO, than skull crushers. I don't think lowering weight down to my skull is the safest exercise to do.

Triceps overhead extensions hit the long-head of the tricep muscle like no other exercise, so I'd do it before I'd even consider skull crushers. It depends on your reason for doing dips, if you were doing it for chest development, close grip bench press would still target the chest, if you're doing it for triceps development then a tricep movement like close grip bench presses and / or triceps overhead extensions.

if you cant do dips, I would focus on CG bench, IMO its the closest thing that resembles the dip that involves both the chest and triceps.

in the intermediate program your already doing triceps extensions on that day, so adding another tri isolation would be a bit much IMO

yes that is what im leaning to right now but would a reverse CG bench be more effective for what im doing than a regular CG bench? I have a friend that swears by these.

Try both out and see. I personally think pronated grip close grip bench presses are better.

I think reverse grip bench is dangerous and not needed, but if you want to give it a go, be careful.

I agree. It's an unnatural movement.

Agreed...I saw a guy break a rib in my gym when he lost grip in one hand.

I second the CG bench presses!
