Looking to buy a home gym.. - Saturday, April 19, 2008 7:00 PM ( #1 )
I would like to build a home gym.

Gyms around here either have: no power rack, one power rack which is used often (and the pins are old and one hangs out an inch farther than the other), or multiple power racks but have absurd gym rules such as "no chalk, no liquid or food on the rubber floor".

I have found the necessary equipment for a good home gym, here are the links and prices (shipping is included):

Barbell set:
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00615738000P?keyword=weider $209.99.  If it is good enough I plan on not having to get bumper plates, you know, since this are rubber encased.  I also looked at this set: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00615739000P?keyword=weider
but those rings don't look like they would be sufficient for heavy deadlifts or being dropped from a power clean.

New Power Rack (looks like PowerLine to me): http://cgi.ebay.com/DELUXE-POWER-CAGE-RACK-Home-Gym-Fitness-Equipment-NEW_W0QQitemZ250236488142QQihZ015QQcategoryZ62135QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

If that one isn't sufficient: http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2845875&cp=2367453.2622932.694004&parentPage=family&searchId=2801366

= $279.99

Flat Bench (incline isn't a complete necessary assistance exercise anyway right? :D) http://www.newyorkbarbells.com/5900.html

What do you think, is this equipment good/good enough quality?  Only thing I think I need otherwise is some plywood covered with rubber flooring.  I don't know how I will end up doing back extensions without a roman chair though  .

Thanks.

I like the simplicity of the power rack, but the bottom line with those is you just don't know what you're getting unless you can actually SEE it in person. They all look the same in a photo, but most of the non health club-grade ones I've seen up close are really flimsy. I'd stick with the big boys for the rack itself -like Body Solid, Yukon, and NY Barbell. If Body Solid is still using the same grade of steel for their systems that they used in my Smith, I'd definitely recommend them. Plus, all their sh1t comes with a lifetime warranty.

As for plates and such, I have noticed that you can almost always get a complete 300 Lb set (with an olympic bar) from Dick's, on sale for $150 to $175. No, they're not rubber-wrapped, but they are excellent quality, and when you consider most places will charge approx $0.50/pound for plates alone, that's like getting the Olympic bar for nada (or should I say "Squat"? )

The Power Rack looks like the newer Powerline.

It's good quality equipment.  Not ultra-sturdy, but one of the best non commerical peices equipment on the market for the price.

It look like the newer version to with more catching pin position options which is useful for partials.
