Looking for Some Advice - Tuesday, February 19, 2008 4:59 PM ( #1 )
im new to this forum and lifting in general, im 18 years old and im 6'4 and weigh about 155-160, as you can tell im very very skinny, i have tried lifting before in spurts for a couple of months at a time but either gave up or just got too busy with other things, this time im serious and ive looked up websites and done some reading but im still confused, i get that i have to eat more and healthier but im still foggy on other things such as a routine, supplements, and to lift heavy or light and how many reps?....right now i have a set of free weights with two dumbells, a barbell, and a small bench....can anyone give me some tips on how to approach this being that my arms and rest of body are pretty much just skin and bone haha, any advice? or links to websites or posts on this forum

Depends on goals as far as routine

You want to get big, you have to eat big, you don't see and dinosaur books with T-Rex eating a mcsalad.

If you want to be lean, same applies, unless you have shrimp metabolism, then you can pretty much eat whatever and be fine.

I used to have exactly what you have when I started working out at 17. And If you are in school I suggest you use their free gym. If not, I advise you to join a gym, before the new-years sale is over would be your best bet. The bench is nice to look at, but you need to work out your whole body, if you are really as serious as you say you are.

Hello kid, welcome to the forum.

You seem to be pretty new, and all newbies need to know what's most important in gaining size.  The most important tool you'll want with you is diet, without it gains are nearly impossible.

Personally, when I bulk I do eat clean, but I don't run from other foods like cheeseburgers either.  But that's just me, that's nothing I'm going to advice you to do.  Not just for the benefits in protein in repairing damaged muscle tissue, carbohydrates for energy, etc. diet is very beneficial to the heart as well.

As far as reps go, that's all up to you.  Just try to mix things up and see what you best respond to, personally during compound exercises i.e. benches, squats, deadlifts, pullups, etc. I prefer to work as heavy as possible (with good form) and in the range of 4-6 reps.  Whenever I work in isolation, I try to focus more in the 6-8 rep range.  But just try to find whatever you're going to respond to the best.

Good luck, and feel free to ask anymore questions.
