If we put up a chat room, then whoever is online we can all chat together, instead of creating a new post just to say hello.

I think it would be cool, a good way for us to all talk and learn together, like sitting by the campfire, talking about BB. ahhh, just like in the good ole days. SmileSmile

I brought that up a while back.. but.. really.. posting is good as it keeps the subjects on topic.. mostly. And everybody including guest can view it.

Chatting while cool... after 5 minutes goes way off topic.. maybe in the future.. but right now.. I did talk that over with Kris and we came to the conclusion that the board was about posting and threaded discussions. But that chatting wasn't really the thing we wanted to do... at the moment. Maybe if we can get Jay Cutler on this board to answer questions, we'll throw up a chat feature for the hour.. Smile

Trust me.. I thought of this idea.. and I've not tossed it. Just need to figure out at some point if there's a way to do it and such. Thanks for thinking along those lines though. Exactly the process we need for cool things to do in the future. Much like that awesome graphic you made.. Beast.

Kind of what I saw on another site a long time ago. "Thought of the Moment'. The section ran down one side of the page and people were able to post whatever they wanted to. Kinda like chat...but kinda pointless on a forum IMHO. I think a chat on a forum site is overkill. Now, if a site that doesn't have a forum specifically linked to it and they put up a chat room, that wouldn't be so bad. Actually, I think IRC chat is your best bet if you're seriously looking into it. Or, just have everyone sign up with one IM service and use that. But, I think to have the server that you are using be the host for a chat it will create too much load and will probably make your bandwidth usage skyrocket.

Maybe we can have a listing or a link on the side with our name for a direct link to an IM program with our username in it. I use Trillian, so I get all the major ones. maybe we could do something like create a skin for Trillian related to DB.com and use that as our offical IM client, this way, if anyone has AIM or any of the other major services, they'd still be able to keep their service and buddy list.

I might be willing to create a skin for Trillian for DB.com. I just need to revisit the skin creation tutorial there and I can do that.

EDIT: possibly create a online status indicator from OSI.org and use Trillian as the IM client. I'll create icons and skins for these if you want.

The indicators look like this by default:

In your profiles you have.. the various e-mail addresses and AIM, IM and Yahoo. So anybody can technically chat up a member if the member has input that into their profile.

Personally, if members want to get more connected that is what a community is all about. But slayerboy hit the topic Kris and I had. Most chats go off topic and take up resources on the server. Granted, very little but.. chat and forum? I've seen AvantLabs use it.. but only when they have a 1-2 hour chat window to discuss a new product or have a guest come on. Then everybody fires up the chat program and can stick to a subject.

But just to go.. hey.. what's up? We can do that now if I just look at slayerboy's IM or Yahoo profile and input it.

Trillian is an excellent program because you can have buddy lists and chat from all the major IM players.

And if you want to make a skin for DB slayerbody, I will personally make it an announcement on the forum and make it part of a newsletter. But it has to look good..professional. If you do this and I like it.. I'll sure as heck make an announcement.

The whole chat thing being hosted on the forum has been discussed. And I'm not against it at some point. Like my above comments. If we needed to host a chat for an hour about something, that would be a good way to grab members in to talk about a subject. But just to have it up.. dunno.. some boards do use it.. but 99% of the chats are just chats.. nothing to do with the subject at hand.

Trillian idea is good..

You're right, I didn't even realize that it showed the status on the profile page.

I'll try working on a skin this week for Trillian. Can't promise a lot, but I'll try Smile
