Left arm smaller than right. - Tuesday, May 26, 2009 9:01 PM ( #1 )
Alright, well let me introduce myself. My name is Luis, i like to be called Louie. I'm 15 and 5'7, about 150-160 pounds.

I play tennis the way my game is set, i mainly use my right arm, thats why my right arm is very dominant. Since im starting to go to the gym, i notice i'm way unbalanced on my arms. It's very notciable, i wanted to know a way to even out. Should i just do more reps & sets with smaller weights? Lets say i can do 3 sets of 10 reps with my right with 30 pounds, i can't even do 3 sets of 10 with 20 pounds on my left . As you can see tennis uneven ed me a lot.
any suggestions ?

I have the same issue coz i'm a right hander like most of the guys out there. I just switched to using the left arm to pickup/carry the plates around and I see some left arm development. But right arm is always more dominant.

This is very common.

Use your left arm more in everyday life, in example: opening doors, carrying books, etc..

Another thing is switch to dumbells..by saying this meaning during a barbell exercise the more dominant arm will always take more of the workload..it's a natural instinct..

If you switch to dumbell movements for the arm in specific, then the consequence will be the arms work individually and therefore will be forced to grow in a better proportion..just remember, if your left arm fails at 8 reps with a 30 pound dumbell...then don't keep pushing with the right arm..lay the dumbell down on both sides..

Don't train anyone more than the other, don't progress with your stronger arm, but don't do more work with your weaker arm, just do enough so that you can do the reps with both arms, and they'll even out eventually. You shouldn't be isolating arms much with your experience anyways stick to mainly compounds.

Train the other arm more to make it balance. This is normal I guess especially for rowers, and those who perform sculling.

Lol I was worried about the comments you would get on this one!

A very, very common problem which I myself had about 6 months ago. (Left was weaker and slightly smaller).

I do a lot of weight training so here's a few tips:

- Use dumbbells only, this will stress each arm equally.
- Use the same weight, reps and sets for both arms, do not do more on your strong arm, even if you can.
- Carry the weights around the gym with your weak arm.
- Try and use your weak arm for everyday tasks, this will build better mental connection.
