Late Night Snack - Wednesday, March 25, 2009 4:15 PM ( #1 )
So as it is right now I go to sleep late around 1am. My typical dinner will be at 5pm so when that 9-10 o clock rolls around im starving feeling like I need a whole nother meal. Any ideas for late night meals or snack that wont be too bad before bed? I have heard many people just stick to a protein shake but I readthat is one of the worst things to have as it will reduce your sleep length and quality. Any ideas thanks.

You should probably have another real meal around 8-9pm and a casein protein shake just before bed. Or if you don't want to eat a meal around 8-9, just take a casein shake instead.

The casein shake surely won't mess with your sleep length or quality, not sure what you're reading lol.

There are posters at my gym (basically magazine cutouts) and protein shakes were one of the worst to eat before bed and a stir fry was one of the best.

lol what?

Casein protein and good fats are the 2 things you want before you go to bed.

That "protein shake" being bad was probably aimed at whey protein shakes, not casein. I dont know what you consider stir fry...but I really wouldnt advise it before bed.

Natural peanut butter
nuts
cottage cheese
milk
chicken
tuna
olive oil
Casein protein shake
cheese

those are all examples of things you may want to consider eating before bed

Warm milk is win win.  It has casein protein and will help you sleep.

I don't know why anyone would say any form of protein before bed is bad. Maybe someone can shed some light on that for me. The casein is certainly best because it is slower to absorb and last you through the night. That is the reason it is recommened since your going essentially 8 hours before your next meal. But if someone didn't want or couldn't take the casein I would think the whey protein shake is next best. Anyone think otherwise?

You dont want whey for the exact reason you mentioned. Your fasting for 8 hours, whey is going to be absorbed fast.

your next best option if your first was a casein shake, would be things like milk, cottage cheese or some of the things I listed above.

Eggs are fine too, I was just giving a few examples.

Whey shakes are better saved for mornings and pre/post workout.

right, but it is better than nothing.....no protein. Even the casein isn't enough to last through the entire night. I look at it like this, better that your covering yourself for 3-4 hours than none.

im in total agreement with you here. The OP stated that the he heard the worst thing you can take before bed is a protein shake. I was simply pointing out that it isn't bad at all. Be it there are better choices if nothing else is available it beats the alternative. Which is nothing.

Go to bed earlier. Rest is just as important as proper nutrition.

Casein powder is much more expensive than whey powder... :(

Warm milk is win win.  It has casein protein and will help you sleep.

I do this sometimes just to be different.  My Mom always gave us this as kids too.  Other times it's a glass or two of ice cold whole milk.

But I have always chowed a bunch of cottage cheese right before bed, and when peaches are in season, I always have fresh peach cut up and mixed in with the cottage cheese.  YUM!
