Large Upper Legs and Knees - Thursday, December 02, 2004 9:13 AM
Hi,

My question is. When I was younger (and I'm thinking this started it) and I was squating a lot. I use to put some 10pd plates under the heel of my foot when I squated. And from doing that my knees stand out more then my calves. My knees and upper legs got bigger. Which makes my calves look sooooo tiny for my body. And I'm afraid of doing any more squats or any type of workout for my upper legs.. Because they are growing with no problem. And my knees are continue to grow as my upper legs grow. Yet my calfs are not changing in size much. They are getting more shaped up witth horse shoe look. But they are not getting mass on them at all.

I do standing calf, seated calf and another version of seated calf. Doing very heavy weights. And I'm wondering is there anything I can do to get my knees to go down size. Or wondering did the beef up because when I was young and working out with plates under my feet. It put alot of stress on my knees so they had to grow to support it. I don't know right now. It's really frustrating right now. So any help you can give. Will help out a lot. Thanks.

I can give you a link to one of the best calf routines I've seen in a long time.

MDA: That's a great link! Thanks, it helped me think of some new things to try.

WIP: Your calves in my opinion are the hardest muscle group to grow because you use them every step of the day. They are extremely dense muscles and even when you work them out so hard that they burn like mad (and of course you do another 10 repetitions after that ), you are probably able to walk fine just 15 minutes later. I mean they are really really difficult to grow in a large number of people, so that's why you need to really shock them and give them a lot of weight for a lot of repetitions.

Regarding your leg squat workout, have you tried front squats? You won't be able to use as much weight, but they are just fantastic. Also hindu squats with your own bodyweight will keep your heart elevated and work on your legs endurance. My training partner and I do 10 in-between sets (while my partner lifts) and then I rest and wait for my turn. Good luck and I hope you reach your goals in 2005!
