Just starting a bulk for first time with no proper guidance...HELP - Monday, August 31, 2009 6:07 PM ( #1 )
**This was originally an email sent to a friend but i did not receive assistance so that's why some of it may be worded funny...
Me- 19yrs old 5'8 143lbs, not new to lifting just new to bulking and i havent lifted in roughly 3-4 weeks due to moving back to school and such

Alright what i am trying to do is to put on as much muscle as i possible this year. As of now what  i am planning on doing is a 2 day on 1 day off routine that looks something close to this ( I started today) :

day 1- chest and tri's
Chest- Barbell Bench, incline dumbell, decline barbell bench=== 3 sets x 5 reps
Tri's-  Push downs, skull crushers, dips etc.==== 3 sets x 10 reps

* The exercises vary i dont only do those exercises there is probable at least 3 other things i do for both chest and tri's. However i make sure i always do Dips(to failure) and Bench because im trying to do as many compound lifts as possible

Day 2- Back and Bi's
Back- Deadlift, Bent over Rows, lat pull down or low cable rows, chin ups/pullups
Bi's- Ez bar curl, straight bar curl, hammer curls

*Same as before i do multiple exercises for both muscle groups not just whats listed. But I always do Deadlift and chinups/pullups (to failure)

Day 3- off

Day 4- Shoulders occasionally forearms
Shoulders- Standing barbell press, Seated dumbell press, Shrugs, front dumbell raises/ side dumbell raises

*Always do Standing barbell press

Day 5- Legs
Squat, Leg Press, Standing/Seated Calf raises, Leg extensions forward and backward
* I usually follow the same leg routine everytime
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alright so thats basically what ive been doing as far as my time in the gym. As far as the non lifting part of it what i planned on doing is:

1)Keep my time in the gym no longer than 1hr because ive read thats the best way to do it to keep your testosterone high
2) Drink atleast a gallon of water a day
3) Eat at least 1g or protein per pound of body weight
4) Eat a bunch or protein as soon as i get back from the gym ( chicken, beef, turkey, maybe a shake)
5) Then i am probably going to order muscle milk and have a shake before i go to bed
6)500 calorie surplus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----Supplements and what not-----

As far as what i want to take daily i planned taking Muscle Milk as my protein supplement, Daily Multivitamin, and BCAA's both before and after working out.

I realize muscle milk isnt the best as far as protein per calories and its not completely whey protein and is mainly Caesin but its the only thing that doesnt destroy my stomach and go right through me.

Questions:
I have no idea how many reps to do because i want to get both bigger but also stronger so im not sure whats the best range?
What Multi vitamin should i take?
Do you get a discount on vitamins or BCAA's at work?
How many and when is the best time to take BCAA's?
Besides protein what are "good" carbs that i should be eating?
Is there anything i should be taking that im not?

And thats about all i have for now. I am willing to try just about anything and like i said i am aiming to put on as much muscle weight as possible. But i think ive included just about everything im following. However ive never had a personal trainer or rudys or any of that **** so ive basically been trying to gather as much information as i can on the internet, trying to filter out the bull**** and i just put together whatever i felt sounded "accurate" and came up with this routine. That being said have no mercy when reading this and if im completely off and wasting my time tell me (no hard feelings) because i dont want to be wasting my time. And any tips, suggestions or anything of the sort will be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend creatine as something you aren't taking.
BULKING LIKE A BEAST! AND IT FEELS SOOOOO GOOD!

Supps: 100% Whey protein, Creatine Ethyl Ester, Fish Oil, Jack3d

Questions:
I have no idea how many reps to do because i want to get both bigger but also stronger so im not sure whats the best range?

Regardless of range as long as you progress with your weight you'll get stronger, traditionally most people will say 5x5 or 3x8 but with strength training comes size and while training for size you'll get stronger. training for size has more to do with eating enough of the right food.

What Multi vitamin should i take?

I like greens+ (freeze dried organic food) but nothing will replace a varied diet

Do you get a discount on vitamins or BCAA's at work?

I do because i know people who work for sup companies how does this help you? heh

How many and when is the best time to take BCAA's?

BCAA's has never washed with me.......jus another (MUST HAVE!) sup to waste your money on. Dont get me wrong you need BCAA's but do you really need to supplement them?

Besides protein what are "good" carbs that i should be eating?

Protein isnt a carb, I pressume by good carb you mean complex carb, so like sweet potatoes, brown rice, etc. Id do some research on Macro nutrients

Is there anything i should be taking that im not?

Nah ive wasted tonnes of money on sups, only ones i take now are greens+ and pysillium husk w. probiotics. Get your diet sorted.
